Ecoli-urinary infections... anyone with a child/baby with one or had one?

My DS ended up in A and E after a fever that wouldn't disappear. He's on antibiotics until he's seeing a consultant and has the 2 scans they do to check the kidneys. Just wondered if any one else has any experience of this... I hate our LO being on antibios but I can see it's better than the infection not going away... would be good to know other people's experiences.

dd2 had the same. Its routine to have antibiotics and scans etc after uti. dd got the all clear and has never had uti since.

Most uti's are caused by ecoli - generally just a normal bacteria in the bowel that gets transferred to the utinary tract ( commonly in little girls when they are wiping themselves)
usual treatment if antibiotics, and most gp will scan (especially in boys) to rule out any kidney problems , very regular treatment. try not to worry. Hope your ds is better soon.

my friend had an ecoli infection as child and as a result lost her kidney...

she now only has 1 kidney, so i suggest you definitley stick with ABs if Dr thinks you need them!

hey all, thanks for your messages. it's good to hear of kids not having any uti's since... having heard lot of people telling me they get them over and over again, i had felt a bit worried! He'll stay on the antibios until the consultant gives him the all clear as there's no way we want to be messing with kidneys. You are spot on there NannyL. I've just been so worried so it's really nice to hear from you all.

My dd had 2 uti's acouple of months apart caused by ecoli. Both were treated with AB and she had a kidney ultrasound just to make sure that all was well..which it was ( Thank Goodness!) She asn't had anything like it for a year now. I found the most scary thing was just how poorly- v hot and lethargic-she became so quickly. Here's to your son making a swift recoveryxxxxx

thanks Moonstruck. God yeah was really scary. One minute fine and then totally off his food, his juice, his milk... didn't want to do anything but lie on my chest and the shakes with the temperature were relentless... still he's full of beans again now and we have the tests coming up - though no word about the nuclear radiology one so will make sure to prompt the hospital about that one. Thanks for your kind thoughts. Gosh - two in a row - that must have been a mare for you are her but that's brilliant that your DD hasn't had anything since. A good night's sleep would do all of us good and he's finally on the mend so fingers crossed! xx

My DD has also had a UTI at 4 months and we are finally having the VCUG scan this Wednesday - 2 months later. She has also had 2 very mild ones since the original one and has been on antibiotics. However she has not tolerated the antibiotics very well - splits them up / vomits etc so I don't feel I have been able to really get them in her which is a worry. I am really concerned that she has reflux.... so fingers crossed here at the moment.

I hope your DS muslinattheready is much better - it is horrid when they are so ill.
