Fell down the stairs on my back while holding baby

I fell half a flight of stairs on my back tonight holding my 12 month old. Thankfully baby was on me so appeared unscathed!

However, I now suffer from a lot of pain in my lower back, in the ribs near the side. Can move about OK though. Was surprised that the NHS 111 clinician told me to go straight to A & E to assess "if any damage to internal organs". I think it's likely muscle damage or minor damage to the ribs.

The pain is already more bearable than when I fell 2 hr ago and I'd rather not go to A & E right now in the current situation. If things change I will ofc seek help.

If you had a similar experience of hurting your lower back, esp. ribs near the side, how long did it take you to recover? Pls tell me it's not all doom and gloom like the impression I got from the call...

I fell one Sunday morning. It was agony, I couldn’t actually move for several minutes and was convinced I would have to call an ambulance. I had screamed so loud in pain even teen shot out of bed to see if I was okay.
I struggled into work Monday and got sent home. Phoned the surgery, Dr prescribed co-codamol and zopiclone for a couple of days and I managed to go back to work Thursday -still tender but manageable. Huge bruise to lower right ribs & hip though.

I hope you feel better soon but do get checked out if you have any concerns, glad your baby was okay, must have been a heart stopping moment for you

@Frequentlymisunderstood gosh that sounds so painful, I feel for you! did you undergo any checks at all?

I think my pain isn't as terrible as what you experienced, though yes it was quite a shock and I did shout so loud that it gave husband quite a scare! My 3 yo was so absorbed in her new books tho that it didn't even register with her?Confused

Anyway, glad you're feeling better!

Yes, I did this. Baby fine, me not so much. But if the pain has lessened, doesn’t feel acute, I’d watch and wait, personally. 111 absolutely has to be cautious in advice, that’s their remit.

For me, I had a massive bruise, was very sore and stiff, and spent a long time reliving it, of course. But pain wasn’t sharp and I felt OK otherwise. I’ve felt worse rib pain after a chest infection cough, so that was my baseline.

Flowers Such a shock. But good to know if instinct kicks in at a high stress danger moment you act to protect the baby, that’s what I told myself.

I did that once OP. I was in quite a lot of pain afterwards. I also fell out of my front door once. I don't think I was holding the DC thank God. But I had a horrible purple bruse on my arm for about a month afterwards.

Bil fell onto his back from 5 steps up. No pain immediately. But after a week got agonising pain in his back. Had fractured his back and two ribs too.

I've done that (without the baby), nearly passed out at the bottom of the stone steps. Managed to crawl back up the stairs to my flat and called my then DP. He wanted to take me to A&E but I refused so we compromised on minor injuries. I had blood in my urine so had bashed my kidneys. Worth getting checked out

I feel down the stairs holding my baby and broke my leg! So don't rule out an injury. I didn't go to a&e that night though as I thought it was just badly bruised 😳

Yes I fell down the bottom four stairs before Christmas.I was alone in the house, eventually managed to get to the couch, the pain was horrendous.I was in pain for at least a week and badly bruised.

Years ago I did similar and ruptured a kidney,so was peeing blood, sure sign all was not well!Watch out for that.I was in hospital a fortnight.

Take some painkillers and see how you go.You will soon know if you have done anything that needs medical attention.

Glad your baby is alright,I once fell on top of one of my babies when I was carrying him in a sling and we were both fine.

Wishing you well.🌺💐🌸

Thanks everyone for the messages! I put a cushion between my legs last night and slept ok. It's still pretty painful esp when changing positions and I'm slow as a sloth but it's bearable and nothing acute. I will see how things progress and maybe call the GP Monday. No more baby carrying for now!
