Fell down a flight of stairs

FTEngineerM · 03/02/2021 21:18

Pretty steep terrace stairs. Yesterday I slipped at the top and came down on my bum, top of back and elbows.

Ended up in a ball at the bottom crying out in pain for a few minutes then pain subsided to nothing so I took a soak in the tub.

Today I am in agony, it’s just getting worse. Neck, back, thigh, elbows and coccyx are all aching if I move/touch them on anything. I’ve never fallen before and ‘doctor google’ doesn’t help much with increasing pain after a fall.

Is it normal? Will it end, or will it just keep getting more painful? Until when? Grin I can’t have ibuprofen because I’m 8 weeks pregnant which I’m assuming would be the best pain relief.

I’d be getting checked at the EPU.

LIZS · 03/02/2021 21:24

You need to get checked out esp if pg. Can you go to Minor Injuries ?

wishywashywoowoo70 · 03/02/2021 21:25

You're probably a bit battered and bruised at the moment. Have you got any obvious swelling which could indicate a break anywhere? Take some paracetamol for the pain and rest up.

dudsville · 03/02/2021 21:25

I expect the pain is bruising and inflammation.

FTEngineerM · 03/02/2021 21:39

I had considered it @LividLoving but since the pain only lasted a few minutes yesterday I though there wasn’t much point. If there were bleeding and/or cramping I would have been straight on the phone. Maybe I should though since I’m in 100% more pain than yesterday.

No swelling @wishywashywoowoo70 few bruises on elbows rest is just internal pains. I’ll get some paracetamol down me.

Oh lord. I had a nasty fall down a flight of stairs when pregnant, I went to the Epu immediately, better to be safe than sorry. Go please op.

strawberriesontheNeva · 03/02/2021 22:08

Similar happened to me a few years back when I was 8 weeks pregnant, except it was an indoor stairs and I literally went down the steps on my bottom. Did not injure and limbs etc. No pains. I had a Miscarriage the next day.

strawberriesontheNeva · 03/02/2021 22:08

You should get some medical advice

FTEngineerM · 03/02/2021 22:10

Oh my god @strawberriesontheNeva I’ll give EPU a call, I’m so sorry that happened Sad thanks for the boot up the butt

Definitely go and see someone, you need to checked out, take some paracetamol too, it'll help with the pain.
Sorry for your loss @strawberriesontheNevaThanks

indemMUND · 03/02/2021 23:18

I did the exact same thing at 17 weeks. Also later tried to lift, failed and dropped a bloody heavy shower base down my front at 21 weeks. Got checked out both times and baby was fine, luckily. At 8 weeks baby is very well protected and still tucked down in your pelvis, but do get checked out if you're worried.

indemMUND · 03/02/2021 23:24

Please don't panic though, at 7 weeks with my second pregnancy I fell backwards and landed really hard. Back, elbows and neck hurt. I had a missed miscarriage but it wasn't related at all, being picked up at the 12 week scan and baby dated as 9+6. Miscarriages can happen for reasons unknown, please don't be too worried as this kind of injury is very unlikely to cause that so early on. I don't feel it's fair to cause you unnecessary panic.

Winceybincey · 04/02/2021 00:50

Happened to me at 6 months pregnant. Didn’t feel pain until the next day, was only my coccyx though. Couldn’t sit, couldn’t move and I had excruciating spasms shooting through it. Went to A&E and they diagnosed a fractured coccyx. Couldn’t X-ray me or give me pain relief though because of pregnancy. Baby wasn’t checked as there was no bleed and he was moving. They may check you out though as you wouldn’t feel movements yet, but likelihood is that baby is fine.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 04/02/2021 07:41

How are you feeling this morning?

FTEngineerM · 04/02/2021 09:20

Thanks every one Flowers

@wishywashywoowoo70 that sounds very painful!! Did it heal in time for birth? I can’t imagine a fractured coccyx helping during labour. I’m aching in more places today Sad I don’t think it can get any worse now but I have spoken to EPU and because I fell on my back/bum and there’s no bleeding or loss I won’t been scanned or anything but to keep an eye next few days. Certainly out my mind at rest a little.

Hey lovely, I did the exact same thing yesterday, to the same end (no obvious breaks but soooo sore today!) only I’m not pregnant. Glad you’ve spoken to EPU, and they’ve reassured you.
I expect we’ll be feeling a lot better in a day or two 😅
I too cried after I fell, but I think that was mostly the shock.

Winceybincey · 04/02/2021 10:40

I think your reply was for me lol! It was only 5 weeks ago - I’m still pregnant. Still in pain but can move around better. It will unlikely be fully healed in time for labour, I think there will still be some pain there so I’m hoping for a water birth. Here’s hoping Smile

If the pain gets too much then do call your GP although there isn’t much they can do, which is why I wouldn’t recommend A&E unless you have a serious break somewhere, but it doesn’t sound like you have. Baby will be absolutely fine.

FTEngineerM · 04/02/2021 12:59

Yes @Winceybincey !! The part about broken coccyx of course, silly me Grin.

I’m hoping for you now too😊Labour itself can fracture the coccyx, you sound very brave 😀.

No I think I’ve come off lucky, few bruised elbows and a really sore bum and thighs.
