Anyone know about low Folate levels?

Have been feeling really tired lately and had bloods done last week.Apparently they've all come back ok apart from one which shows low Folate levels.I have a feeling it may be linked to vit B12(which I already have regular jabs for),but I'm not sure.
Have an appointment tonight to see the doctor but wondered if anyone else has had this and knows what it means, please.

i think it may be low iron stores.

Seona1973 · 30/10/2007 11:02

is it not to do with folic acid rather than iron?

Seona1973 · 30/10/2007 11:05

the web seems to indicate it is lack of folic acid which can be implicated in depression:

The link between folate (folic acid) deficiency and severe depression - as well as other psychiatric disorders - has been well documented. Most recently, a study in the Nutrition Review looked at the relationship between folate and depression. Low folate levels were detected in severely depressed people and, conversely, symptoms of depression are one of the main indicators of folate deficiency. They also found that people with low folate levels don't respond as well to SSRI-type antidepressants. Good dietary sources of folate include calves' liver, pinto, garbanzo, navy and kidney beans, lentils, asparagus and dark leafy greens. Overcooking the greens can destroy the folic acid, so lightly steamed is best.

do you have pernicious anaemia?

The regular jabs are for that, Doh!

I thought mine was low, but it turned out to be a virus/sad.

PinguKiller · 30/10/2007 11:11

Must take time to read op properky, sorry!

Bubbaloo · 30/10/2007 11:51

Thanks.
Yes I do have pernicious anaemia and have jabs every 12 weeks for that.
I also Googled low levels and found the link re:depression, but seeing as I'm not depressed, wondered what else it could mean.My diet hasn't been too good lately so I expect that may have something to do with it,or maybe I need more frequent B12 jabs if the 2 are related.

I have B12 jabs and had low folate levels last year. I was just given folic acid tablets and iron tablets as I was also anaemic. My B12 problems are caused by stomach not absorbing vitamins properly (not diet), so low iron or folate are related for me anyway.

Bubbaloo · 01/11/2007 21:36

Thanks. How long did you have to take the tablets for?
I went to my gp and he has given me Pregaday iron tablets to take.He said my B12 levels were ok and I wasn't anaemic so that was good.I really can't get on with iron tablets though as they tend to upset my stomach.I'm hoping though that after a week or so it will settle down.

For 2 months. I was given pregnaday and they really upset my stomach. I had to take 2 a day. My levels were fine after that.
I was exhausted like you, but things did improve after a few months. Hope you feel OK soon.

Bubbaloo · 03/11/2007 22:40

That's great,thanks.
Luckily I'm only taking 1 a day and I'm hoping it's not going to be for too long either.Strangely enough,I am starting to feel a bit better already.
