DD1 has just come home with a big fat neck and a weirdy rash - what degree should i pitch my panic?

She was crying in her classroom and saying she can't move her head. I checked, and she can put her chin on her chest. I looked at her though and one side of her neck is huge - the other side a bit bigger than normal - she is having trouble turning her head. She was shivery and weepy and said her armpits hurt. Just stripped her off expecting armpits to be a gland thing - but there are funny lumpy spots in her armpits.

Went into the pharmacist who did shrugging and said go to the doctors in the morning.

She's taken herself up to bed.

Do i do doctor calling. Maternal instinct thing tends to get stuck in these situations and i sway between calling 999 and doing the shrugging and saying it's viral and you're fine.

What do you think?

Call the doctor. That way, the worst thing that can happen is that you were a bit over-anxious. It will reassure you that everything is ok or it will get your dd some medication etc if she needs it.

WanderingGraveyards · 29/10/2007 16:35

Mumps?

StaryNightSky · 29/10/2007 16:35

Think I would phone the doc, you should be able to catch them now befor the end of surgey.

Does she have a temptrture?

I was just thinking mumps, sorry sounds like what I had when I got mumps. But she should have a temp too. To be honest if here glands are that swallen and she has lumps under her amr pits which could indicate glands are up there too.

Just phone and ask to speak to the GP or ask for an appointment at the end of clinic.

Hope it is nothing

ProfYaffle · 29/10/2007 16:36

I would ring the Dr's too. Hope she feels better soon.

StaryNightSky · 29/10/2007 16:36

Just thought this might help mumps

Bocoreepy · 29/10/2007 16:37

I thought mumps, but she did have MMR - can you still get mumps if you've had the vaccine. It's really noticeably huge, like half a satsuma.

Will call the dr.

yes better to call now than still be worrying about it after 5pm

oooh would be dreadful to worry about it at 1am

poor love. Give her a big hug from Aunty Capp

StaryNightSky · 29/10/2007 16:38

Yeap!

Call the GP.

I'll keep poping back.

gizmo · 29/10/2007 16:39

Weeeelll, I often find NHS direct a nice halfway house. Typical scenario: DS1 spotty, vomitting and distressed. Gizmo hotfoots it to phone.

NHS direct take details in soothing fashion and say they'll get someone to call back.

45 minutes later someone will call back and give me some information. What that information is will be irrelevant, because by then DS1 will have stopped throwing up, be cuddled up on sofa with tv and duvet and generally settling in for a night of cossetting.

Alternatively (and probably better given it's 4.40) it's probably worth calling a doctor to check on which symptoms you need to keep a sharp eye on.

bubblepop · 29/10/2007 16:39

phone out of hours doc.asap

DumbledoresGirl · 29/10/2007 16:40

It doesn't sound quite right for mumps in my mind. My son had a mild case of mumps (yes, after the MMR so it is possible) and it was more his face that was swollen than his neck. But I suppose different children can be affected in different ways.

I would definitely ring the doctor but I am not someone who can wait for anything.

Hope she is better tomorrow.

Bessie123 · 29/10/2007 16:40

I had 2 MMR jabs (doc made mistake) and still got mumps and measles. It's possible.

Hope your dd is ok.

FunkyGlassSlipupandyouredead · 29/10/2007 16:42

sounds like swollen glands which is probably viral. I'm sure mumps is overall swelling as opposed to a ball type swelling iykwim.

ledodgy · 29/10/2007 16:42

I would ring the doctor too. It may be mumps but I know what DG means. When I had it One side of my face swelled up first and was very painful like very bad ear ache. I remember this more than having a temp or swollen neck.

millie99 · 29/10/2007 16:43

Any chance it might be chicken pox? My DS had v.swollen glands in neck and head before the spots came out.

DumbledoresGirl · 29/10/2007 16:44

Reading ledodgy's post, I think I was first alerted to ds's condition when he complained about his ears aching. Or painful swallowing..... I am hopeless at remembering!

SpookyDooooo · 29/10/2007 16:48

Sounds like glands to me, i would take her to the doctors

StaryNightSky · 29/10/2007 16:49

Any luck with the Doc's

Bocoreepy · 29/10/2007 16:56

The dr just called back and said he'll see her in an hour.

I was obviously very clear and explained everything perfectly because after waffling on at him he said 'i don't understand you, i understand the words you are using, but not what you are actually saying and i think i'd better see her'.

OP posts:
DANCESwithHughJackman · 29/10/2007 16:58

at you doctor Boco! I'm sure you were completely incoherant utterly clear about what you were saying. I'm just the same when I'm worried about dc! Let us know how she gets on.

Bocoreepy · 29/10/2007 17:00

When he said 'describe the spots' i said 'i don't know, spots! spots! like...spots! - you know?'

So yes, i could do some work on my describing.

OP posts:
DANCESwithHughJackman · 29/10/2007 17:02

Well for goodness sake, you can't get clearer than that. Silly man

WanderingGraveyards · 29/10/2007 17:05

lol at 'like...spots!'

Thesaurus

Bocoreepy · 29/10/2007 17:07

Oh thank you, i'll practice those words for the appointment

OP posts:
gizmo · 29/10/2007 17:11

I'm now picturing Boco's conversation with the doctor:

'so Mrs Boco, when did these spots appear'
'the first snort made itself present while she was at school, but soon we found motes in her armpits, speckles on her torso and dollops all over her face, poor thing.'

That should clear it up, I'm sure.
