I'm on metronidazole and I feel insane

Yes the hole in my gums is healing over now but at the expense of my sanity and digestive system!

Any tips for existing alongside this awful stuff? I still have two days left!

It is vile stuff. All I can suggest is to take it with food, drink loads of fluids and if possible don't attempt to do very much else.

cripez · 21/01/2021 11:07

I couldn't if I tried! Yesterday I had to go to the supermarket and went around holding onto shelves like I was about to collapse! Not doing that again until I'm off these things.

Have DS home for the day, he's 6 and autistic, feel awful that I can't do fun enriching stuff with him. I've just had to stick the tv on for him and let him loose with all his toys. Managed to sling a casserole in the slow cooker.

It's working a treat on the post extraction infection, I have to give it that.

Two more days... I can do this...

Oh you poor thing it’s vile. I was on it regularly until I had all my wisdom teeth out and it’s horrendous stuff! Sounds like you are doing amazingly though, I used to just cry for five days! Lots of fluids as a pp said and don’t even think about booze.

bestbefore · 22/01/2021 14:55

Oh gawd I've just been prescribed this stuff for wisdom teeth infection....Shock

GnomeOrMistAndIceGuy · 22/01/2021 14:58

Oh it's awful isn't it? When I was about 20 I was prescribed this and in my infinite wisdom ignored instructions not to drink alcohol. I have never ever been so ill as that made me.

cripez · 22/01/2021 15:01

I have two tablets left!

On home strait now but honestly feel like I've been hit by a car. It's just like early pregnancy!

Gave me green diarrhoea horrible I feel for you

LilaGrace · 22/01/2021 15:10

Metronidazole is the absolute worst. I had it years ago for a dental problem, I forget what. I threw up after the first tablet and felt awful. My GP tried to prescribe it last year but I told her I needed an alternative as I couldn't tolerate it. She was fine with that- just ask for something else.

bestbefore · 22/01/2021 16:50

😟 worried now...but the pain is so bad...

afaloren · 22/01/2021 17:12

You must take it @bestbefore it is awful but not as bad as sepsis would be!

bestbefore · 22/01/2021 17:15

Yeah I will - dreading not having a glass of wine for a week or so though. Am waiting for extractions. That'll be fun too. Not

safariboot · 22/01/2021 17:17

Have you asked your dentist or GP for advice? If it's having such severe side-effects surely they can give something different?

I've had metronidazole a couple of times and it gave me no issue, so @bestbefore take heart that not everyone gets it bad. Of course don't drink alcohol on it.

Madvixen · 22/01/2021 17:18

Oh it's bloody evil stuff. I've been on it (off and on) for the best part of a year and it's just horrendous.

Biggest tip I can give is do not ignore the advice about taking it with food - it really does make a difference to the nausea

Pumpertrumper · 22/01/2021 17:20

So I’m always the 1/10 who reacts awfully to medicine but weirdly enough I was ok on this. I mean I was sooooo poorly from the infection that maybe It masked side effects but I can’t say I felt much different.
Had no appetite literally had to take it with tiny bits of baby food fruit pouches. But I already wasn’t eating because of the infection. So could have been that!

amylou8 · 22/01/2021 17:26

@bestbefore I had it a few months ago and tolerated it fine, hopefully you'll be the same. I'd rather give birth than have toothache!

magicstar1 · 22/01/2021 17:31

I’ve never had any mental health issues luckily, but that stuff made me suicidal. I was in bed crying convinced I was about to die.
It also gave me oral thrush.
The worst thing was that it turned out I didn’t need it in the end...the doctor misdiagnosed a gum abscess.

Chalkcheese · 22/01/2021 18:09

Was like magic got rid of my infection completely and I have taken it 3x and would take it again, even though it was also like poison IYSWIM

cripez · 22/01/2021 18:27

It works just fine.

It has made me utterly seasick for the whole time I'm on it. I sway when I stand up.

NotMuchOfaLife · 22/01/2021 18:32

Feel I got off lightly as only made my mouth feel ming & got tongue coating although that did go on own once finished course so maybe not oral thrush.

Chalkcheese · 22/01/2021 18:37

Ooh yeah I forgot about the dizziness, sea sick feeling and vertigo... sometimes the cure is temporarily worse than the ailment

Chalkcheese · 22/01/2021 18:38

Once your done, have some probiotics as it decimates your gut bacteria. Yoghurt for the win Smile

cripez · 22/01/2021 18:51

DH is being very unsympathetic 'they can't make you feel THAT bad'

Ha. Just you wait until you get a face infection, mate...

OP posts:
NotMrsTumble · 22/01/2021 19:14

Sympathies, only 2 to go and they should do the trick. I am told they are the absolute best antibiotic of choice for dental infections.
I was prescribed them once by my gp, but felt truly horrible on them, almost cried with relief when the gp carried and said I'd need a different antibiotic as the swab they'd taken showed the metro wouldn't work.

FreeFallingFree · 22/01/2021 19:18

It's brutal, but effective. The only antibiotic which worked on a persistent dental abscess I had.

EmilyInParis · 22/01/2021 19:37

Accidentally had some alcohol with them once.

Never ever again. Ever.
