If you have GERD what are your symptoms?

Just trying to work out what is happening with my dd. GP is currently working on the assumption of gastric reflux but isn't sure this is her problem.

How does gastric reflux affect you - do you typically vomit in the morning and sometimes go through a whole day of vomiting?

My dad had bad vomiting all day and sometimes all night with all the general GERD symptoms like heartburn, acid reflux etc. It turned out a stomach ulcer that was the main cause. He had the stool test for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in the end (after bugging the doctors a lot) which came back positive. He was put on antibiotics and strong PPIs for 4 weeks then a camera down his throat to check if it had healed which it had.

I have GERD. Before I had medication I would have a lot of acid reflux/vomiting through day and night. Now I only get it occasionally at night. When pregnant the medication didn't touch it so it was back to day/nights.
Tip- sleep on the left side!

I don't vomit or feel sick at all. I get a sore throat and a hoarse voice and a cough. Extremely painful acid reflux. Omeprazole helps.

Elouera · 19/01/2021 22:55

If I dont have ompeprazole, I get heartburn and occasional acid at the back of my throat. How old is your DD? I recall this happening when I was about 7 and telling my parents I had fire in my throat.

I have never vomited from it though. About once a month, I can get a balling of food at the base of my throat for no apparent reason. Soft things like potato chips or very soft bread and mainly if I havent drink anything with it. The ball of food is very painful to get down. I assume this might be a hiatus hernia, but GP has never done a scope, despite numerous requests and also being H Pyloric a few years ago.

Thank you for sharing these experiences. I am not convinced that dd has Reflux but that seems to be what the GP is going with in the first instance. She's been given lansoprazole

I have GERD and have heartburn all the time, food/acid rising in to my throat, coughing after eating and pain in the upper mid sternum region pretty much all the time... vomiting occasionally but not all the time. No medications rid me of it entirely and I take esomeprazole and Fermotidine as well as OTC remedies...

My cousin has gastroparesis which is vomiting all day every day and being unable to keep food in her stomach... might it be this? Worth a look if GERD doesn't fit her symptoms...

sadie9 · 20/01/2021 00:32

Is there a chance it could be hormones?? Does it map to her menstrual cycle?
She needs to give the lansasprole a good three weeks to see if they help.

LimitIsUp · 20/01/2021 12:41

Must say, it does seem to map better with gastroparesis

I don't vomit.
I suffer with apnoea because the acid goes in my lungs at night, so I can't lie on my back.
I can feel the acid rising up and down from my stomach in the day. Puts a bad taste in my mouth and sometimes makes my throat sore.

SpudsandGravy · 20/01/2021 12:56

Hi. My GP has decided I have this and has prescribed Omeprazole.

I don't think it's what I've got, though, as there's no acid involved for me.

What happens is that sometimes when I eat (generally if I eat last thing at night) the food goes down (I'm not aware of a problem swallowing, although my GP characterises it that way) but almost immediately it comes back up again with what seems to be gallons of phlegmy stuff. This regurgitation with masses of fluids then continues for 5 or 10 minutes - sorry for the TMI, but I generally have to go and hover over the loo to keep spitting it out.

My mother died of oesophageal cancer and I worry that for me this may be an early symptom. A gastroscope didn't reveal anything, though, hence the Omeprazole prescription.

My GP thinks I may have this.
I have no gastric symptoms, never vomit, no indigestion.
I do have a productive cough that is worse when lying down and keeps me awake half the night. I thought it was my asthma but GP says it could be "silent" reflux. I'm not convinced.
