Not sure what else to do?
Do I sponge him with cold water?

How old is he?

Strip him down to just nappie/pants. Cold drinks and open a window.

elescarybells · 28/10/2007 19:33

tepid water not cold - strip him off.

i would wait another half an hour to give the nurofen to work, i hate it when they're ill

ScaryMonsterStories · 28/10/2007 19:34

sponge with cool water. Not cold

MadMazza · 28/10/2007 19:34

Give the nurofen a little longer to work - i think it should soon.... but do sponge him down as well.

MadMazza · 28/10/2007 19:35

Let us know how it goes won't you....

Heated · 28/10/2007 19:36

Give it time to work. Would suggest you space the nurofen/calpol every 2 hours.

Dh has a bath whatever the hour with ds or dd, which seems to both cool them down and cheer them up.

dd666 · 28/10/2007 19:38

not cool more luke warm bath it should cool him down no end or put him in pjs and walk up and down garden for 5 (if its not raining)

bunnyhunny · 28/10/2007 19:39

we had this a couple of weeks ago. stripped him to a nappy in a cool room, and offered plenty of water. I was also told to give calpol every 6 hours, and do the calprofen 3 hours later.

It came down after a while, but he was miserable for a couple of days [bless emoticon].Seemed like flu or something..

bunnyhunny · 28/10/2007 19:40

oh yes, and cool flannels on his body.

make sure he drinks lots of water.

foxinsocks · 28/10/2007 19:42

yes, give the nurofen a little longer to work.

(dd and ds have also had something similar. Truly vile. They are nearly 6 and 7 and it completely wiped them out for well over a week.)

alibobins · 28/10/2007 19:43

Ok he's 2.9 and lay on settee in just his pull up
He's asleep he has been in and out of sleep since 3. Don't know if the clock change isn't helping.

He's really clammy but shaking like he's cold.

Is there a horrible bug going round.

Olihan · 28/10/2007 19:45

Have you got a fan? That works a treat on my 3. Agree on spacing calpol & nurofen to 3 hourly, then there's never a gap when you've given the max dose in 24 hours.

Dd and ds2 had this last week, temp stayed raised for 48 hours, then dropped. Poor things seemed so poorly but bounced back as soon as temp eased.

Olihan · 28/10/2007 19:47

X-posts. Doc said it was viral tonsillitis for my 2 but it seems to be going round where we are. Lots of their friends have had it too.

foxinsocks · 28/10/2007 19:48

yes, there is a flu like bug doing the rounds.

Unfortunately, both mine ended up needed courses of antibiotics because they developed all sorts of nasty infections afterwards so keep an eye on him if he's susceptible to things going to his ears or chest.

alibobins · 28/10/2007 19:51

Chest is a big problem for us

Feel like ive jinxed him I was saying hoe well he has been this last week.

How long do I give meds to work.

He hasn't had a drink since about 2.30

Oh I really don't know what to do for best.

OP posts:
alibobins · 28/10/2007 19:52

how

OP posts:
MadMazza · 28/10/2007 19:54

If you are really worried phone NHS Direct - their phone number will be in the phone book. As he is so young they might let you speak to a doctor and he might be able to reassure you or suggest an emergency doctor you could take him to if he is concerned.

foxinsocks · 28/10/2007 19:57

you'll need to get some liquid down him if you can, at some stage - even if it means spooning some in or letting him suck on a lolly

yes, call NHS direct if you're worried (and don't hesitate to take him in if he has problems with his chest).

Olihan · 28/10/2007 19:59

Ice lollies - cool him down and give him a drink. Or Ice cubes, would he suck one?

alibobins · 28/10/2007 20:00

Just tried waking him but he was all floppy
I'm on hold to nhs direct.

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 28/10/2007 20:03

how is he now?

have u any ice cream in or ice lollies? or melon?

a combination of him being in his pull up, being sponged with luke warm water and it left to evaporate on his skin as well as the icecream (or whatever you have) should help along with the meds.

NHS direct is 0845 46 47 (i think) if you are still worried

MerlinsBeard · 28/10/2007 20:05

sorry x posts

dd666 · 28/10/2007 20:15

hope hes better soon its so tiring small ones being ill hoping you dont get it too!

alibobins · 28/10/2007 20:20

ok after a short wait on hold I was put through to a doctor and he's advised that with ds's history he's got to go in

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 28/10/2007 20:22

better to have him looked at ali - esp if he is prone to chest things

the temperature and lack of fluids are probably making him floppy so if he wakes up, try and get some fluid down him in the meantime

I hope he's Ok, poor fella.
