Any dentists about who could give an opinion on DDs emerging incisors? Pic included.

Just wondered if there was a dentist about to give a professional eye. We have a dentist but he isn’t seeing anyone unless there is pain involved so this doesn’t really apply.

DD is 12.

Her incisors have taken an age to come through. Now they have finally emerged they are coming through incredibly slowly - I’m talking months and months. Now I can see they are coming through at the weirdest angle - they look pointed but actually appear to be facing forwards. The point emerging is one of the tooth corners.

Do I need to push for a dentist to see this, or is this something which settles as the teeth further emerge? Both sides are identical.

Dentist has prior said she will likely need a brace due to overbite and genetically I am unsurprised. I had years in orthodontics through my teens but my incisors never did this!

Professional view would be appreciated.

I’m not a dentist but to me it looks as though he is missing one set of incisors and those are the canines coming through, at a normal angle.

TBH I can’t see that a dentist could do anything in till all the baby teeth are out and adult teeth in anyway

I think those are canines and she’s missing her lateral incisors? Laterals should be through way before 12, whereas it’s the right age for canines.
Needs an orthodontic opinion.

They’re not lateral incisors that are erupting now OP, they’re definitely canines.
Do you know where the Upper 2s are? Has she had a pan oral radiograph recently ? She needs a radiograph really to assess properly.

They are either peg shaped laterals or she has congenitally missing upper laterals and those are actually the canines coming through. Neither is anything to worry about, she will probably need xrays to confirm whether they are laterals/canines and then ortho work +/- cosmetic work. Nothing needs to be done urgently now though, most orthodontists tend to wait until all adult teeth are fully through before commencing any work.

Thank you all. Don’t know if it’s coincidence but my same incisor teeth are tiny - disproportionately small compared to my front incisors - but I’d never considered that she’s missing them altogether!

No she’s never had an X-ray - never had a need.

I think I’ll phone dentist tomorrow and ask - luckily she’s really unbothered by it visually so I’ll see what they say but I can see it’ll need work one way or the other.

No need to phone dentist as they will say they can’t tell without looking at her.
At her next check up discuss it. At 12 there’s lots of time to get this sorted.

As a pp said there's honestly no point at all in calling the dentist. It's not an emergency and can be discussed at her next check up. Don't waste their time during a very stressful period for dental practices!

Thanks all. She’s not had a check up since November 2019!!! It was scheduled for April 20 then cancelled and obviously it’s still not happening. I will take the advice and wait it out now the consensus seems to be it’s not an issue. Thank you.

OP you should email that photo to your own / your daughter's dentist today and let them make a decision.

In normal times, a radiograph would be taken and an orthodontic referral made. Patients with malocclusions which include congenitally absent upper laterals always come under the auspices of NHS orthodontic treatment. Some parts of England have 3 year waiting lists. So it is definitely a good idea to contact your dentist and email the photo over.

If you have small lateral incisors yourself it can be that hers are missing or also microdont. She needs an OPG radiograph which shows the position of all unerupted teeth in the jaws.
