What is this brown stuff on the edge of my fingernail?!

I have frightened myself silly by googling it and results come up with nail cancer and possible having to amputate fingers!

This brown stuff is now starting to form on two other fingers. Does anyone know what it might be?!

Shall I talk to a GP?

I had this too. Scared myself silly as had already recovered from one cancer. I think it will be a blood blister under the nail - in which case as the nail grows it will grow up with the nail and have clear nail below. Or it is a fungal infection.

Have to stubbed your toe, rubbed it, bashed it? Of course as soon as someone asked me that, I couldn't remember. Toe nail cancer is really rare. It has a high death rate because people don't notice it and leave it for years before doing anything. Mine was in a fairly straight line. GPs looked at it and referred to a consultant who said it was subungal haematoma. It grew out in about four months.
