Clarity regarding vitamin D and co factors

Hi
I have read so many confusing messages regarding taking vitamin d and co factors such as vitamin K2 and magnesium. I need concrete proof why and at what dosage of vitamin D that I need to take vitamin K2, magnesium (and I can’t remember what other co factors have been mentioned too!) Many people have posted on mumsnet that we should be taking these co factors when taking high doses of vitamin D. I have questions:

  1. show me concrete proof that I need to be supplementing with these co factors when taking vitamin d regularly?
  2. if I have a healthy diet is it really necessary to take these co factors?
  3. what is considered high dose of vitamin d that I need these co factors?
  4. at low doses are co factors needed?
  5. if one regularly tests their vitamin d level and it’s not excessive....is there any reason why I would need to take co factors when blood results have come back fine.

Surely vitamin d would not be sold in shops on its own without adding in vitamin K/magnesium, or at least have a warning on the pack that vitamin d should be taken with co factors???

I am so angry and annoyed about this! Please can someone tell me if vitamin d can be taken purely on its own without co factors? Concrete evidence would help to clarify matters. Thank you.

There isn't really 'concrete evidence' - I'm unsure why you're so angry? There's plenty of decent advice out there though

I personally have taken vitamin D with K2 at a level of 4000 for about 18 months. It's worked from me in raising my levels from insufficient to optimal - evidenced by blood tests

You don't have to take this stuff if it's causing you angst just thinking about it

@LuciaLemon- I guess less angry just more annoyed at so much conflicting advice. So many comments saying taking k2 /magnesium etc but there is no concrete proof that it’s needed and needed at what level of vitamin d. There needs to be clear guidance if this is needed or not.

What’s wrong with just taking vitamin D on its own? I have been taking vitamin d and it has solved all my symptoms so I am loathed to add in other co factors unless really necessary in case it adds other problems for me.

The “concrete” evidence is as much out there for you to find as it is for other people to give you. All you can really do is your own research and draw your own conclusions.

My anecdotal evidence is back in March my vitamin d levels were on the low side about 30mg/nl and after 4 months taking daily dose of 4000IU my levels were up to just over 100. I also take magnesium supplements but not K2

The magnesium wasn’t to benefit the Vit D by the way that was to help with sleep issues!

This isn't "proof" but the BetterYou product page for their Vit D + K2 combined spray states simply the reason for K2 and recommended dosage.

If you search the BMJ you may find papers on it.

I see. Thanks for the comments. I still feel in the dark about this. No clear evidence for taking K2 and or magnesium with Vitamin D. So when someone posts that ‘if you don’t take the co factors with vitamin d then it’s dangerous and causing calcification of your arteries’ then I will just take that as ‘opinion not fact’.

@DianaT1969-Thanks but that is only one product amongst a vast number of vitamin d supplements. The vast majority are sold as pure vitamin D. But thanks for the link.
