Whilst I know its not that bad , dd1 has been in distress most of the night and day , (moaning and crying and flailing her body but found to be asleep when we go in)and this follows several infections (5) over the last 10week . She cant eat solids easily, as the ulcers are enormous in her mouth and she has a temperature and is extremely fractious. Other than that she doesn't have the spots yet associated with it , so IM not really sure????????. Looks like we'll have another fun time with a poor hysterical dd1 in gp surgery tomorrow morning. She has soooo had enough of it all , as have I .

YOur poor DD
I know a couple of people whos Lo's have had this but strangely enough my children didn't although they were in contact with it.
I remember it being very painful for the mouth with HUGE ulcers like you describe and pinprick spots on backs of hands feet and nappy area.

Cold food like youghurt, lollies and cold drinks is all I can suggest as it hurts to move your mouth when it is like that. Oh and can you put bongela on the ulcers?

If it is Hand foot and mouth its a virus so its just calpol etc til it goes

ScaryMonsterStories · 22/10/2007 18:10

Melsy, My DD3 had a herpes simplex (coldsores) infection in the mouth a few months ago (and DTD1 is just recovering). The mouth symptoms are very similar to HF&M - without the hand and foot. It occurs as a first exposure to coldsores and is characterised by a very high temp (Both mine were 39+) and swollen abdo glands which can cause abdo pain. Apparently also general achy fluey pains.

DD3 was very poorly with it and almost ended up in hospital with iv fluids for dehydration. DTD1 coped better as she is older and bribable

GP is unlikely to treat as both are viral and must be treated within hours of first blister unless it is a very serious case (which DD3s was, but we were too late at GP as she got it at weekend).

I would recommend stocking up on lots and lots of yoghurts & weetabix. Keep fluids up as this is the real risk. Paracetamol/ibuprofen can be used for temp & aches & pains. Bonjela can be used 20-30mins before eating if it makes it easier, my DDs couldn't tolerate the initial pain though.

If it is the coldsore it is an incrediably nasty reaction to a simple coldsore and you have my greatest sympathy as it is a nasty nasty disease.

melsy · 22/10/2007 18:11

ahh and she has a sore throat.

She seemed to enjoy ice cream just now and some chocolate earlier. Fruit sends her screaming, so Im resorting to things that only come out for special occasions.

Oh and Flamey's DS has hadf this too and will back up everything I have said - except her DS got anti-virals

orangehead · 22/10/2007 18:13

poor thing. My kids had it the doc didnt have a clue what it was and blamed it on virus but the HV pickied it up, she then told me 'dont worry coz adults cant get it' but a few days later I got it . I then understood why the kids were so grumpy I dont think I had ever felt so ill it was horrible, but didnt last long. Hope she feels better soon

ScaryMonsterStories · 22/10/2007 18:15

Sore throat will be swollen glands & poss tonsils....all fits.

Anything acidic (fruit) or salty will be v painful. yoghurts and weetabix are the only thing DTD1 (6) would eat. as for DD3 (15m) we struggled to get 2 yoghurts + 200ml milk in per day - hence the dehydration.

CarGirl · 22/10/2007 18:17

my friends dd had mouth ulcers from herpes, she didn't eat for weeks and was so ill - it was horrific.

Apparantly the first attack can be absolutely awful but hereafter will just be an ordinary coldsore I believe

ScaryMonsterStories · 22/10/2007 18:24

Absolutely right Cargirl.

It is the first immune response to herpes which is so nasty.

You get so many bisters/ulcers as the body has never seen it and doesn't know how to react.

You get all the other symptoms (temp, swollen glands, aches) cos your body is working v hard to get rid of it.

Once your body has seen it once it can respond much quicker next time before it gets so bad.

melsy · 22/10/2007 18:25

shes thankfully been drinking a bit , but keeps wanting the foods that will set it off.

She already has a tonsil problem already and the consultant is waiting to see what happens with her to decide on a tonsillectomy. Shes 4 yrs old so he wants to avoid it if possible.

awwww bless shes eating a banana and its hurting and saying she cant eat or do anything . Shes not a very good patient anymore after infection overload. Im also being a useless mum, Im so saturated.

Sorry girls Im confused are you saying scary that it could be the herpes thing ? Small spots/adhesion's have now shown up on her feet above the instep.

dh and I dont know what to do , weve been back and forth to gp, hospital (drips Iv antibiotics etc), consultant for weeks and dont feel were doing enough for her. Im feeling she needs to go straight to an ENT specialist , but we dont know whether we go straight over the paediatric consultant, who jst wants to wait (and let her suffer the rest of the year??????????. Its all complicated with the private insurance too.

My dd (5) had this a couple of weeks ago and it was awful. The mouth ulcers were horrid She caught it from ds2 (9 months) but don'nt know where his came from.

JodieG1 · 22/10/2007 18:31

Avoid fruit as the citrus is acidic, you need yoghurts, ice cream, water and soft food really. Dd couldn't drink or eat and nearly had to go in for iv fluids.

ScaryMonsterStories · 22/10/2007 18:33

If she has it on her feet now it is likely to be hand foot and mouth I think - herpes is unlikely to spread. I was just pointing out an alternative when you said there we no hand and foot symptoms.

It is still a virus

It is exactly the same in the mouth as herpes

Has she tried yoghurt? DTD1 actually found that quite soothing after the first mouthful. She was going through about 6 a day for a few days

melsy · 22/10/2007 19:04

Well I think its spots , just little blotches on the top of her feet. Its hard self diagnosing.

my gp has called , as we were converting a private prescription (for a progressive prophylactic antibiotic) into an nhs one , but the gp doesnt agree with the use of the medicine prescribed , so wont transfer it , now what. He has however made an appt for her in the morning , although he felt she should go to A&E , whilst distressed , I dont think its quite that desperate ????

OP posts:
JodieG1 · 22/10/2007 19:34

With my two we thought the spots were chicken pox at first but they were smaller than that. They were like red round blotches which then had little blister like (tiny ones) things in the middle, looked whitish and had them mainly on hands and feet but also elsewhere. The ulcers were really bad though in her mouth, luckily ds2 didn't get any in his mouth. Maybe as I'm still bf him?

melsy · 22/10/2007 19:47

Im really worried now , as my dad has called a doctor friend who thinks we should take her to A&E , as the ulcers could be red herrings and the fact that she may have been halucinating last night as didnt wake when crying is all not a good sign??????????????

She seems ok for now , although keeps hearing us talk on the phone about hospital and wont go to bed ! Shes cool and has had a dose of nurofen.

and now dd2 is crying and wont go to bed and dh has just left the house for a wake this evening.

OP posts:
melsy · 22/10/2007 19:49

dh however thinks were all overreacting and that shes fine and just has a virus and that he did talk with her during the night and that she was awake through some of it.

OP posts:
Papillon · 22/10/2007 19:53

Oh no! Have you taken her to a natural practioner Melsy? Maybe her system immunity is very low and she needs additional assistance not just gp medicine.

(((())))

melsy · 22/10/2007 19:54

she doesnt seem to have any spots on the hands at all, theres these very faintly raised pale pinky red tiny tiny blisters on her feet.

OP posts:
melsy · 22/10/2007 19:57

Totally totally agree paps ,and feel it will help alongside the medicines shes taking, I also want my friend to do some reiki on her, but dh wont entertain the expense, im fighting many battles it seems right now .

OP posts:
Papillon · 22/10/2007 20:01

I would consider more, a naturopath, some form of herbal supplement. I know a chiropractor here who also does work on the immune system, recommends vitamins. Perhaps your dh would be more open to that??

Will inform the healers of Bong land that reiki and healing is sought

melsy · 22/10/2007 20:06

Im givng her an extra vitamin dose , designed for kids , acidophilus tablets and echinacea in her drinking water at the mo.

OP posts:
Papillon · 22/10/2007 20:10

Thats good A specialist would be able to pinpoint what she needs, my sister has taken her kids to a chiropractor with natural health supplementation and does energy work questions on them and diagnoses from the results.

Cold sores could be lycine deficiency?

melsy · 22/10/2007 20:17

thats in tomatoes and mant fruits isnt it? Im trying to think, she doesnt have tomatoe raw , but eats it cooked a lot and many other fruits raw.

OP posts:
melsy · 22/10/2007 20:20

ahhh jst looked it up , its in cheese , fish and legumes , she eats cheese and a little fish ,but not many legumes, she spits them out !!! I love beans and pulses in soups an dahls. She hates the texture !

OP posts:
Papillon · 22/10/2007 20:20
