Any experience of UTIs or similar in a one-year-old?

I am slightly concerned about my 17-month-old dd. Obviously I'm not enormously concerned or I would take her straight to the doctor. I'm thinking of taking her to the doctor today anyway, just to be sure, but I think there may be no point going without a urine sample. And I don't even know if there's anything wrong really...

Symptoms are:
Occasionally crying and becomming distressed when she needs a wee. Not every time she wees, just once in a while, and usually after a nappy change when her mind is on all things nappy-related.

Pointing at her bits and telling me they are sore. I'm not sure if she knows what this means or thinks that 'sore' is a word for her bits. She does sign 'hurting' at the same time, but may have copied all of this from me when I was asking her if her bits were sore and doing the 'hurting' sign.

There's obviously something bothering her, but I have no idea what really. She has no other symptoms, no funny smell, no temperature - fine happy and healthy as far as I can see.

Very slight redness in her vulva but this only came yesterday and she's been complaining on and off for over a week.

I hope I don't sound like a terrible mother for not taking her to the doctor already. I'm not sure there's anything wrong. She has mild general anxiety about weeing and pooing at the moment, but more in a dislike of mess sort of way. It could even be something as simple as her nappies being a bit small and needing to move up a size.

Your thoughts?
