Urine Infection

Hi, I'm new to this site - I just wondered if any of you had any experience with urine infections in babies, my 12 week old son has been diagnosed with a urine infection, he has had a course of antibiotics, but my doctor is concerned as she said this is unusual in boys, so she has refered him to a paediatrician to get his kidney's checked. I am obviously worried about this and just wondered if anyone has experienced this - is it really that unusual??

Thanks

Don't know I'm afraid, but someone might be along in a minute - if not, though, keep bumping it up so people see it over the next couple of days!

These days it's standard procedure in young children to investigate urine infections in case it's kidney reflux - where the urine runs back from the bladder into the kidneys. Usually the paed will get an ultrasound scan done, which will either confirm or rule out reflux. Chances are it's just one of those things (boys do get urine infections, it's not all that unusual) but it's best to get it checked out because he's so little.

Try not to worry. Chances are everything's fine.

Hi,
my daughter had a urinary infection at 12 weeks (after a op the week before, we suspect it had something to do with that)

They checked her kidneys (gave her a scan) to make sure that the urine was flowing in the right direction. Everthing was ok.

She has been fine since then, she is now 5. Funnily enough she had another infection 2 weeks ago and the GP told us we should get her checked again in a few weeks because urinary infections are unusual in small children.

So I imagine it is just routine that you are being sent for tests, I do not know if boys are different though.

Thank you - he has an appointment for a scan a couple of days before the paed appointment - I'm hoping it's just routine.

Thanks for your replies!
