Question to chronic uti sufferers on long term antibiotics

Hello, hoping you're doing ok and the lockdown hasn't been too harsh... If you're under Mr Malone's team, or Mr Ali and taking long term full dose antibiotics - how long did it take you to notice a considerable improvement in your symptoms and less flares after triggers (sex, illness etc.)? And how are you avoiding thrush, or treating it whilst on antibiotics? Also, is any of you trying to conceive and how do you manage all that? Thank you!!

Have you tried D Mannose?

Rogben13 · 28/11/2020 22:22

Hello! I’m with Mr Ali and have been in treatment 12 weeks now. I had a huge flare up 2 weeks in that lasted about a month but since 6 weeks onwards I felt 80% better! I still had slight burning and bladder awareness but I had an amazing last few weeks. I unfortunately took the rout of having a cystoscopy this week and I’m now having a huge flare up again. I also have a prolapse which is adding to everything.
I’ve been on doxycycline and Hiprex and have had a couple of instances of thrush but took the fluconazole tablet and it was gone within 2 days. I take biokult probiotics and garlic capsules which I’m so sure help in not getting bad thrush.
Are you on the embedded UTI Facebook page? Xx

Thank you @1940s and @Rogben13! I'm taking D Mannose. I'm rather new in the chronic uti world, it all started in August this year. Probably had a slow burning uti for a couple of weeks before I realised, then it took another week for the culture to come back. They did not give me antibiotics before as dip test did not show anything. Have had about 5 to 6 courses of antibiotics since...symptoms come back after a couple of days of finishing the course. Cultures have shown a couple of different bacteria and eventually started to come back as insignificant or mixed growth... Saw a private urologist and had an ultrasound scan, CT scan and MRI done, everything came back as normal. He then agreed to put me on a month long course of Cephalexin and we'll take it from there. He also suggested I get a 2nd opinion as he cannot help me further. Having done some research, I'm now waiting for my appointment with Mr Ali. Waiting times are a couple of months. I'm less than 2 weeks into my monthly course and have had a couple of good days and some quite bad days (bladder pain and urgency). Especially around ovulation as trying to conceive. Cannot take fluconazole because of this, but have stocked up on Canestan pessaries. I need to give it time by the sound of it... I appreciate I haven't been suffering that long at all, but I just want to have a few days without constantly being aware of my bladder... Will check out that Facebook page, thank you!

Prof ML for me. Started on cephalexin, symptoms initially got worse and then about six weeks in slowly improved. Improved again once I started hiprex. Took many months and several flares to feel completely okay. Remission lasted several
Months but then symptoms came back. Have since had to swap antibiotics a couple of times to get things under control again but have now been on amoxicillin since June and feel absolutely 100% well, best I've been for 15 years.

I also take fluconazole when I get thrush.

Thank you @GwendolineMarysLaces and glad to hear you are well!

How long were you in initial treatment for before you swapped antibiotics? As I’ve never felt 100% and that’s 12 weeks in, I have one more 6 weeks prescription but if I don’t get there after this I’m thinking of trying something else.

Hope the D Mannose helps alongside your medical advice. I know sometimes it's like taking a knife to a gunfight but it dramatically changed my life so I always mention if it I see a thread like this. Best of luck

@1940s, sure and I appreciate your advice. I'm swearing by them at the moment plus antibiotics.
