Gum pain after new crown

MrsBartlet · 02/11/2020 06:56

I had a new crown fitted last Tuesday and it has all been fine until Saturday night when the gum around it started hurting. Yesterday the gum felt swollen and bled a little when I brushed my teeth. Does anyone know if this is a normal part of the healing process or do I need to call my dentist? I wouldn't be worried if it had been hurting since I had the crown fitted as I would assume it was just healing but I am concerned that as this gum pain has just started that maybe it is a sign something is wrong. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Safest to phone your dentist.

My husband had this same issue and it was an abcess under the crown. They said they could possibly try root canal but he ended up having the tooth extracted

Thanks both. Sounds like I should call them then! Was it a new crown @crochetcrazy1978? It does feel a bit better today I have to say which is why I thought it may just be a normal healing process.

Yes it was a new crown. He'd had an abcess and they gave him antibiotics and said he'd need a crown. It got better with the antibiotics and they fitted the crown. Few days after gum started swelling and antibiotics didn't get rid of it so that's when they suggested root canal or extraction

Your poor dh! Sounds slightly different as he had the abscess prior to the crown so gives me a little hope this might not be that. I am not in severe pain - just tender and bleeding gums. I have called the dentist and they are going to get her to call me back. Thanks for the advice!

How did you get on?

MrsBartlet · 03/11/2020 16:56

It is starting to feel a bit better now but the dentist called me back this morning and I am going in to see her on Thursday for her to check it out. She said you can get gum irritation after a new crown but she want to see to make sure it isn't anything worse. Thanks for asking!

I keep getting food stuck in my teeth near my new crown.

MrsBartlet · 03/11/2020 20:44

Maybe you should speak to the dentist @tobee and they may be able to adjust the fit.

Rinse with warm salt water in the meantime
