High Eosinophil count - any experience or insight into what this may mean??

Had a blood test last week and the results have come back with a high eosinophil count. Looking it up, it seems they are "..disease fighting white blood cells..."

The normal range is 0.00 - 0.4 and my count is 1.2. I can see a graph of my eosophil count from 2013 and it's never gone beyond 0.2. At the top of the blood count results it states "noted eosinophilis".

I'm currently experiencing hair loss, which is why I asked for the blood tests, but the GP said the high count is nothing to be concerned about and is nothing to do with my hair loss.

I can't help being a tad concerned as surely it must be high for a reason?

Grateful for any insight!

Do you suffer from allergies regularly as it is normal to have high count I'm such cases. It could also indicate parasite infection.
Hair fall is usually caused by hormonal imbalance or b12 / iron deficiency. Do you feel dizzy? It is also normal after delivery and in perimenopause.

Thanks for your reply. Iron is fine, take ferrous fumarate daily. B12 was actually slightly over upper limit. In terms of hormones, they checked oestradiol level and that was 840 pmol/L which wasn't flagged up as abnormal. I don't tend to feel dizzy, though if I do I put it down to low blood pressure!

I'm definitely perimenopausal but just worried how long this hair loss will go on for and wondered if the high eosinophil could account for something that may be causing the loss.

Oh, and no allergies particularly. I do get a rash all over my body whenever my heart rate goes up, if I'm rushing for example or at the gym, and that's annoying but couldn't pinpoint a cause (apart from heart rate increasing!).

A drug reaction can cause a raised eosinophil count, like an allergic response. Have you started any new medication, supplements etc recently?

NonsensicalHair · 01/11/2020 22:47

choirmumoftwo - I've been taking some supplements for a few months now, mainly the b vitamins, vitamin D and fish oil capsules. Medication wise I took vagifem for a two week loading period and at the end of that is when my hair started to fall out, so I stopped it, this was back in August. I thought it was down to the vagifem, but no-one seems to think this is possible so looking for other causes!

You need to discuss the rash with the GP- though it could be harmless. Rash is usually a sign of allergies or your body could be overheating for some reason probably because of a high dose supplement or perimenopause.
Vagifem could be the reason behind your hair fall - why is your GP refusing to make the connection? I heard it is the most common side effect of vagifem. A lot of women complain that they loose hair by handful after using vagifem.
If you have already stopped then it might take time for your hormones to go back to normal.

Thanks. Literallyfedup, it's good to hear someone else confirm that vagifem could be the cause of my hairloss! Even had someone on here on a different thread tell me it couldn't possibly be. I also had the same hair loss reaction with the pill and HRT, so it seems to be any hormonal thing. I'm hoping that as I near the three month mark of stopping, things will return to normal but so far it's still shedding voraciously Confused

It's because the dosage is so low that the GP didn't seem to think it was that, but it's simply too coincidental that it happened when I started the vagifem.

They don't seem concerned about the rash either! Think I may try and see someone privately.
