I'm on day 4 of nil-air-by-nose and am desperate for something to work. Have tried Sudafed (absolutely no effect), Beechams cold stuff (moderate success), Otrivine (partial, short term relief).

Echinacea will boost your immune system - ask your pharmacist.

Olbas oil sprinkled on your pillow at night. Try a few drops lavender oil in a warm bath.

Hope you feel better soon.

Whiskey, lemon and honey (+hot water). Might not clear your nose but will make you feel better. I have this cold too. Get well soon.

I once read that chicken soup (proper broth) is the closest thing we have to a cure for the common cold... Rest too is the only way. get well soon

pulsatilla homeopathic capsule things from Nelsons - they sell them in Boots etc - about £4 for a little green container - THEY ARE THE BEST STUFFY RUNNY NOSE THING EVER EVER EVER EVER - when I discovered them I wondered why no-one had told me! I give them to my kids and my baby - BRILLIANT! You can take loads of them aswell.

NoviceKnitter - what is this "rest" that you speak of? It is an unknown concept to me.

Will get echinacea (though I hate it and I'm not sure it works) but am intruiged by this pulsating homeopathic remedy and shall grab a load of that too.

constancereader - I tried that but with brandy. No cure there, but certain a certain conforting degree of relief.

I promise you it is miraculous!

i have just had a horrendous cold
try this thread for hot toddy recipes
also, run a warm bath for yourself but also at the same time fill your basin with hot water and add 15 drops of olbas oil (keep the bathroom door shut)
the steamy vapours really help

also, alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen

wish you better!

scampadoodle · 15/10/2007 19:48

Hot toddies & fistfuls of paracetamol

Olbas oil

Chicken soup (Jewish penicillin - honestly. Try to get some Telma chicken stock cubes & just dissolve them in boiling water. When I had flu a few years ago my Sis-in-law posted me some from Golders Green! Still in cube form, obviously )
