Acid reflux in adults Omeprazole not working

Just that really...

Does anyone suffer from GERD (acid reflux) and managed to find anything that works? I've been taking Omeprazole for 8 weeks now and it's done nothing. I have a constant burning feeling in my throat it feels so sore. I have a 3 month old baby and the Dr says it can be hormone related after pregnancy. Just really want to find something that works it's really draining, on top of the lack of sleep from my babyConfused

The usual gaviscon etc does nothing either. Has anyone found any relief?

Ask for Lansoprazole, it's the next step up and can make a real difference. Works brilliantly for me ad my DH, where Omeprazole hardly touched it

Your other options are cimetidine or famotidine. They work differently.

Pantaprozole is the strongest ppi, so maybe ask for that?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/10/2020 11:02

I’m on lanzoprazole and it works well.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 18/10/2020 11:02

Also, you need a referral l would think.

Pelleas · 18/10/2020 11:03

Lanzoprazole works for me.

wineandsunshine · 18/10/2020 11:05

Keep a food diary too!

Jeremyironseverything · 18/10/2020 11:05

I'm on 20mg odd omniorazole but it's not enough. It took a long time to work and is ok for a while and then I get the burping, wind and tight feeling in the chest again. Extra gaviscon isn't helping at the moment. I need to ring the doctors again to increase my dose.

I think stress makes it worse. I'm a bit stressed this week. Your body will be too with a new baby, even if you are also enjoying it.

AcornAutumn · 18/10/2020 11:06

Sorry to say it, but my mum went up through these and it got worse.

When she looked into how it works etc, she wondered if she’d be better off without.

She stopped taking it - doctor wasn’t happy - took aloe Vera juice for about a month, now has a daily probiotic and is back to normal.

FlorenceNightshade · 18/10/2020 11:06

What dose are you on? Maybe it needs upped. If you don’t think it’s helping get back in touch with your GP

RiseUpWiseUpEyesUp · 18/10/2020 11:07

Was going to say lansoprazole as well, omeprazole did naff all for me but lansoprazole works great

cookiesandcream24 · 18/10/2020 11:17

Oh wow thanks for all the replies that's so helpful to hear everyone experiences.

I'm on 20mg twice a day. After the once a day for a month did nothing, but this ha also done nothing. The dr said no point referring me as they are 5000 cases behind currently so I'd never get seen.

Yeh I've got a gut feeling it's stress from baby etc. I'm breastfeeding too I don't know if that plays a part? She wakes every two hours in the night and my husband works away so stress levels def at a high right now.

Just coming to the end of my dose this week so going to get back to the GP

Mine first started when I went on a strict diet. How is your eating?

Kittytheteapot · 18/10/2020 11:23

I didn't have any success with omeprazole so was prescribed 40mg of esomeprazole instead which has worked for me. I was symptomless for a few months. Unfortunately, the symptoms are back now and I have run out of my prescription, but I have found 20mg of esomeprazole, which you can buy otc, works ok too.

I don't know the difference between esomeprazole and lanzoprazole though?

cookiesandcream24 · 18/10/2020 11:28

@Jeremyironseverything

When symptoms started I hadn't made any changes to my diet or anything. I eat very healthily most days. And sure to avoid any potential triggers, spicy food, alcohol etc.

Also never suffered with this ever before in my life, only since having my baby

I paid to go private as NHs is seized up. £200

3kidsareenough · 18/10/2020 12:01

I second the Lansoprazole, it has made such a difference to my stomach I'm on 30mg and have been taking it for a few months now. Before that none of the over the counter products worked.

cookiesandcream24 · 18/10/2020 12:03

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince yes the thought has crossed my mind. Will look into if the next lot of treatment he suggests doesn't work I think
