Acid reflux and anxiety

Hi there

I am looking for some advice. About 4 months ago I started suffering terrible anxiety i stopped eating nearly and lost over a stone in weight and was put on valium then 4 weeks after that I started having terrible stomach issues symptoms are acid reflux, burping, grumbling stomach, pain at top of stomach, burning throat. The doctor gave me nexiem which at first worked well but I had to increase the dose eventually as its not as effective now. I had a ultrasound, ct scan, transvaginal scan, about 10 weeks ago . All OK just found a small fibroid and my adrenal gland swollen due to stress probably but nothing to worry about..... Fast forward now and still the stomach symptoms continue and my anxiety is so so bad. I just cant handle it anymore I worry constantly that its something awful . My doctor says ive had tests and i should feel reasured by this but I dont .

My worst symptom is the feeling like the acid is crawling up from my stomach and into my throat. My throat constantly feels like there is water at the back of it and my throat burns sometimes. My ears feel burny too . Its all wearing me down. My dh says this is all caused by anxiety.

I'm still taking the nexiem but it only helps with 60% of the symptoms and ive tried to stop it but just couldn't manage and ended up back on it .

Has anyone else suffered with this ?I would appreciate your experiences .

Thank you

Have you tried Peppermint capsules? They don't exactly stop the reflux but they coat it in peppermint which is a lot more pleasant to belch than acidy bike.
Also Andrews Salts are very helpful but you should watch how much you are using, as there is a daily limit.
I have ordered Reflux for Dummies after reading a previous thread on here, so will be trying to absorb all that info when it turns up.

Thanks I haven't tried peppermint as I hear it can affect the les the opening of the stomach as it relaxes it and can make reflux worse.. ive tried everything else though

I have struggled with this exact problem since approx September 2019. My referral to ENT was cancelled due to Covid, and I have been left on a program of Lansoprazole and Gaviscon Advance.
My main issues are constantly coughing - which is embarrassing in the current climate of suspicion & fear, and mucus trapped in the back of my throat.
I am unable to find ANY position in which to sleep. Raised upright on a foam wedge, my throat sinks into my neck (chins!) on my side, my throat seems to instantly block.

I'm off now to investigate Silicol gel & foam blocks to tip my throat backwards. I'm afraid that if I am not seen by ENT soon, it may develop into Barretts Oesophagus.
Will be watching this thread - I hope that we all find help soon.

I have similar for few years, does anyone get the noises in throat? I've noticed the last few months I get sort of stomach gurgling noises in my throat and sometimes when I take a sips of a drink my throat gurgles after and also my chest.
Have mentioned to my doctor but she don't seem to be bothered by it?

Mollylolly · 30/12/2020 18:24

Hi athousandwords my doctor told me it takes years and years to develop barrets if left untreated so I wouldn't worry . I know its hard as the symptoms are so awful I have constant feeling of water in throat it makes me a wreck.
Kissmelittleass
Yes yes I get the throat gurgles all the time since all this reflux started I get it when I swallow saliva or liquid straight after it makes this little gurgle noise . Really unsettling.

@Mollylolly I'm so glad you said you get it too iykwim I thought it was something just happening to me. It really scares me this constant gurgling in throat don't know anyone else with this so kind of comforting to know I'm not alone!
I've just taken some gaviscon extra liquid to see if it helps but seems not so far!

Mollylolly · 30/12/2020 19:13

I dont find gaviscon helps me unfortunately . Ive had this 7 months. Do you feel a water or mucus feeling in throat?

@Mollylolly I get the mucous feeling at times very annoying, I also get the horrible taste in my mouth in the morning and I've tried everything nothing works. I sleep with two pillows plus a v pillow on top and even boost the height by putting cushions underneath so I look like I'm about to take off as she puts it!!
It's supposed to help being raised up rather than lying flat but yet I get this horrible taste in my mouth, do you get it?

Gwenhwyfar · 30/12/2020 20:02

I'm 43. Tested negative for h pilori and I now just take omeprazole. It's bearable for me though. I see it as a common middle-age ailment rather than necessarily part of the menopause - plenty of men have it too.

Mollylolly · 30/12/2020 20:58

Yes I get a horrendous sour taste in mouth of and on during the day . I too have my bed raised and sleep with a ridiculous amount of pillows I end up sliding off them every night.

Yes it is a common ailment but its very distressing as its so chronic at the moment.

I have LPR and also anxiety. Had barium swallow done due to constant sore throat and that's when I was diagnosed. I questioned the consultant very closely about increased risk of cancer but he is am ENT and said he has never known anyone with LRP go on to get an associated cancer from it.

Interested to hear about the link with sinuses. I get the mucus feeling at the back of my throat and have to do a horrible retching cough to get rid of it. Also have a lot of sinus pressure. I didn't realise that could also be related to LRP.

I also clench my teeth and have TMJ but not sure if there is any relation with LRP. More likely anxiety causing both?

Catsneezies · 30/12/2020 21:16

I put a pillow under my mattress at the head end so no messing around with lots of pillows that move around. I sleep on quite a firm gel pillow. I've found that helps.

Gwenhwyfar · 30/12/2020 21:27

"Interested to hear about the link with sinuses. "

I also have sinus problems!

Catsneezies · 30/12/2020 21:37

My anxiety tells me that my on and off sinus pressure must be a brain tumour! So being able to link it to LPR is really helpful.

Mollylolly · 30/12/2020 22:58

Hi catsneezies yes I get a lot of sinus pressure and ear pain it only started after I started getting reflux. So there definitely a connection for sure. Yes I sleep with a quilt folded under my mattress and sleep on a good few pillows. I also have horrendous anxiety wich I think makes things worse. Are you on a ppi for your LPR?

Catsneezies · 30/12/2020 23:17

I was on omeprozole for a while but kept testing whether I could come off it and after about 6 months I did.

Mehripoop · 25/06/2021 05:37

@FaffingForEngland I know this was ages ago but I have the same symptoms. I’ve actually had a sinus op thinking it was causing all the sore throats and ear pains but I now suspect reflux. What did you take for it and has it worked?

Thoughtthatcounts · 26/02/2025 06:44

@Mollylolly - I know this an old thread but experiencing the same symptoms… did you get better and if so what helped?

Mollylolly · 26/02/2025 10:10

@Thoughtthatcounts Hi ,unfortunately not . I am still suffering. I have had 2 endoscopies since and I was diagnosed with mild gastritis and a 2cm hiatus hernia. I actually had an appointment last week with another gastro doctor, who is going to speak with a surgeon to see about fixing the hiatus hernia. It's been 5 years of misery.
