13 mth son green poos - is it because of cows milk?

Hi, I'm weaning my ds from formula to cows milk. He's 13months. I started by mixing some cows milk in with his formula which was no problem and since this Sunday he's been 100% cows milk which he drinks fine. He's now having terrbile explosive greeny diarrhoea. He doesn't seem ill, off his food or anything but 4-6 or so times a day these awful poos that leak everywhere. He's been fine with yoghurts, cows milk in his breakfast porridge etc for the past 6 months. Could it just be the change in his digestive system or is it an intolerance? I can't think it's an intolerance as he's been having dairy in his food no problem. Maybe he can only tolerate so much milk and this is too much? Did anyone else find that when they weaned onto cows milk their child had diarrhoea? Maybe it is just a stomach upset and has coincided with the change to cows milk. We're going on holiday on Saturday so I'm a bit concerned as to what to do... whether to sit it out and see if he settles down or something else? As you can see I'm confused !! Any advice would be appreciated (I did post this in the food section but re-posted it here so sorry if you've seen this before).

Yes we had this when we started switching over from formula to cows milk!

Didn't link it to cows milk for ages, we thought it was a recurrent tummy bug. Then after 3rd or so bout in as many weeks we saw GP then Paeditrician. The latter took dd off all dairy for a fortnight. For the first 4 days of this we had to give her diluted formula while her system got back to normal(first 2 days 1/3 strength, next 2 days 2/3 strength) then after this she had formula milk as normal, but no other dairy for the fortnight.

After that we were able to slowly reintroduce cheese, yoghurt etc, looking for problems. Still no cows milk or cream etc. Been a month now and matters are much improved. The one time I mistakenly gave her soup that had cream in we had a recurrance of the explosive diarrhea next morning, otherwise we've been pretty ok. Sometimes cheese, yoghurt etc can cause runniness (TMI?) if she has them in any quantity but mostly she's fine on them.

Apparently in dd's case it is probably a lactose intolerance that might have been caused by gastroenteritus. Doctor said it is something that can be recovered from with a little time / grown out of and says she can stay on formula for another year if needed..

also worth mentioning - doc said fruit juice can add to the problem so asked us not to give her fruit juice unless it was incredibly well diluted..

Do get it checked out by GP though - ours asked for nappy samples etc before diagnosing.

HTH.

my DS who's totally intolerant to any "cow" products used to do frothy green / projectile poo (this is going to be one of those TMI threads)

maybe go back a step - and try again later? i.e.after your hols! or wait for the rest of the milk-experts on MN to help u out, as i give my DC goats milk and am no good to u on formula advice.

HTH, good luck!
