Cervical vertigo anyone (dizziness from neck issues)

Long story short, been having upper back/ neck pain for a few months. Seemed to be getting better but have been hit in the last 6 weeks by dizziness.

I have good days and bad days. Some days hardly any spells but they seem to be getting worse as time goes on.
The first time was in my bed when I turned over and felt everything spin. Since then it’s been more that suddenly everything goes weird (not really spinning) more like the world just suddenly moves and I grab something solid. It’s scary. That lasts for a few seconds, sometimes up to a minute, but can leave me feeling off with low level dizziness for hours. It now happens most days, but other days I just feel off and a bit dizzy and fuzzy in my head, but manageable. I find I prefer to move about when it’s low level happening as sitting can make it more obvious and my nervous system seems to be soothed more if I keep moving.

Stress and anxiety is obviously a factor here as it’s scary to feel out of control of your body.

It’s not BPPV as I can look up and down with no dizziness, lie down flat on and head position doesn’t matter. The Epley manoeuvre doesn’t work.
Getting to see my GP has been frustrating and I’ve had 2 telephone consults - one about the back pain, was diagnosed with trapezius strain and got naproxen, didn’t do anything. The second I have next week, so still waiting.

Otherwise a healthy forty something. Anyone had anything similar? No scary stories please as I’m a bit of a wreck already with this.

Hello, any updates from the unfortunate souls suffering with this? I'm having the same symptoms, it's almost been a year now

Satsunday · 13/09/2021 09:18

I've had this on and off now for about a year. It started when I did a lovely big stretch in bed (actually turned out not so lovely) and something clunked in my neck. I was ok until I tried to stand up and I basically couldn't stand. I fell to the floor with the room spinning 3 times and then just sat on the floor panicking. It did go but then every time I turned to lie on my left side or tried to look up the room would spin again. It really is horrible. Even wakes me at night. No idea what the solution is but can empathise. It's interesting to read that it might be linked to perimenopause although I'm 43 so maybe a bit early?

@Satsunday how are you now ? X

RoxieLoxy · 19/02/2022 07:52

@Starrr123 sorry for the slow reply. Its Satsunday here with a different username.

Thanks for asking. My dizziness went in the end. I'm almost positive it was from my neck. It took a while to go completely but now I don't have it at all even when turning over in bed (used to get it badly turning onto my left side).

Starrr123 · 19/02/2022 07:54

@RoxieLoxy im sure mine is my neck! What helped you?
Its doing my head in 😩xx

RoxieLoxy · 19/02/2022 08:00

Honestly only time helped. I didn't do anything else although tried to avoid the things that made me dizzy like sitting up to quickly or turning to the left.

I did try that thing where you put your head back and sit up and turn the other way. Sorry can't remember what it's called. You'd need someone to see if your eyes are moving left and right though when you're feeling particularly dizzy. That can indicate its your ears not your neck and make doing that manoeuvre worthwhile. You might already know all that though Smile

Hope it goes away for you too.

Starrr123 · 19/02/2022 08:14

@RoxieLoxy thankyou! I didnt know that :) im actually going to a physio/vestibular physio! Because its when i turn my neck it hurts , i feel dizzy! And i have tinnutis when i turn my neck! So weird feeling! Thankyou❤️

RoxieLoxy · 19/02/2022 08:36

Just looked it up. It's called the Epley manoeuvre. I think best done under supervision though. Good luck Smile

Starrr123 · 19/02/2022 08:48

@RoxieLoxy thats what the physio man said he was going to do! ❤️

RoxieLoxy · 19/02/2022 10:49

Thats good. Report back on here when you've had it done. It can be really effective so fingers crossed for you.

I have exactly the same symptoms, definitely worse with stress, I get this feeling when I move my head, I don’t know if it would be described as dizziness but I feel like I’m going to fall over, like I’m losing my balance or I’m going to faint, but it only lasts a split second. I’ve also been getting headaches and neck and shoulder pain.

I put it down to an ear problem as it all started last year when I had a terrible pain in my ear and feeling like it was blocked, which I assumed to be an ear infection, I also felt really nauseous because of the dizziness/loss of balance, I couldn’t see anyone due to Covid, but the ear pain and nausea only lasted a day or two and I’ve had this dizziness problem ever since.

My fiancée is a physio and is convinced it’s coming from my neck, but I think it could be my ear.

I hate it, because it makes me feel even more anxious, it happens mostly at work and seems to flare up then settle down for a few days or weeks. She’s treating my neck at the moment to see if it helps and if it doesn’t I’m going to go my GP.

I turned over in bed seven weeks ago and had a severe case of vertigo. This has happened to me 3 or 4 times before. As well as looking up at a skirt in my wardrobe and it happened again. Always up to this point i feel back to normal after a day. Seven weeks on I still feel low level dizziness. A few weeks ago I felt like the floor was spongy but that has now stopped.
Having read what many of you have said I remember once a beautician telling me she could not believe the tension in my neck and shoulders. Said it was the worst she’d ever felt. Even the beautician who threads my eyebrows tells me their is tension in my face.
I am a very anxious person.

Starrr123 · 01/12/2022 22:49
