Obvious black triangles have appeared on lower teeth after hygienist visit

It’s really weird! I’m fastidious about my teeth. See my hygienist every 4 months and whilst I do have some natural gun recession, I have no fillings and my teeth are good.

Due to lockdown I’ve had to seek out a new hygienist locally who offered Airflow on top of a standard scale. It had been about five months since I’d last had my teeth cleaned. She found no really issues, found some tartar on my lower teeth so sorted that. Did the airflow. I came home and now notice I have unsightly black triangles between a few of my lower teeth.

I understand that it indicates bone loss and gum recession but it’s weird how it suddenly appeared where I’ve never experienced this with my old hygienist (she only ever used a manual method).

Do you think it’s just the new hygienist has done a more thorough job, and now the triangles are visible? Might they improve a little as that area did feel pretty sore afterwards, it’s been two days since I had the treatment.

I should add that I did have a very small black triangle between one of my upper two teeth which I’ve pretty much sorted using Gingegel which is a hyaluronic avid gel. I’m going to apply this to my bottom teeth diligently too and see if it helps at all. It shall be an experiment! I’m still confused as to how quickly theyve appeared though Confused

@justanotherneighinparadise What do you mean, is the skin actually black on your gums? Can you post a picture or give them a call if you want to know why it's happened?

Clymene · 23/07/2020 12:45

Well maybe your old hygienist wasn't very good. Sounds like there was tartar in the gaps between your teeth.

Ernieshere · 23/07/2020 12:46

Do you mean gaps?

That’s absolutely what it sounds like doesn’t it!!!!

Black triangles are where gum no longer exists inbetween your teeth. It’s quite a shock to be honest.

The papilla has receded. Sounds like she did a through job, I had the same issue with my old hygienist.

Notsherlocklove · 23/07/2020 14:36

I mean, I was having a standard clean at the dentist but I was never told it should have been a deep one.

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/07/2020 15:10

It’s crazy isn’t it!? You do everything right and yet still it fucks up. I’m looking into bioclear treatments which is fancy composite binding for the future if I get to a point where it’s embarrassing.

Oh the joys of ageing 🙈

Hi, can I ask if you have gum disease or ever been told you have? As I have some tiny ones of these after having braces last year (I'm 28), the dentist and hygienist have both said no gum disease or issues and never have done but it freaks me out!

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/07/2020 18:14

Nope no gum disease. I think age plays a factor. I know orthodontic work definitely plays a part so that’s why you have them.

What I will say is I have never used those interdental brushes, only flossing, so my plan is to get some and use them daily. Also get yourself a product like Gingegel or any other brand of hyalauronic acid for oral use and apply, apply, apply. It’s honestly amazing and the black triangle I had between one of my top teeth has not pretty much gone. So I have hope I can improve the situation with time. But I’m just shocked it’s happened. The money I’ve spent on bloody hygienists over the last decade. Thousands and thousands of pounds!

Ah that's a relief to hear! Yeah I've also got super thin gums as well so might be due to that combination of braces and thin tissue.

That's so annoying for you! The other hygienist must have missed it which is irritating isn't it. Why do you get them cleaned so frequently is it just something you have always done? I'm going to get mine done every few months now, it was never mentioned to me when I went the dentist but after getting them cleaned when my braces were removed I loved the feeling!

marmite92 · 23/07/2020 20:54

Will also look into that gel too! Only thing I'd say is make sure the interdental brushes are the right size, I've shoved a few in to my teeth which didn't fit properly and I'm sure some of my recession could also be due to that!

justanotherneighinparadise · 23/07/2020 22:13

I used to go so regularly because I was so paranoid about gum recession and it’s happened anyway!! Which is absolutely on par with how most of my life plays out 😬

Haha I feel you there!

This has just happened to me too. Gutted. Like you am very worried about gum recession and do everything I can to avoid it and usually am religious about regular hygienist visits but was scuppered by covid, got some tartar build up in bottom teeth and this seems to have caused some recession between a couple of the teeth. No gum disease.

Just wondered how you usef the gengigel on your top tooth? Do you use the gel version and how often are you applying. When I've used it in the past I found it just came straight off.

And how long did you have to use it before you noticed a difference?

Nets888 · 08/08/2020 18:10

I have black triangles too and using Gengigel. I'm interested to see if you have anymore improvements @justanotherneighinparadise

Nets888 · 30/05/2024 10:18

@justanotherneighinparadise are your black triangles now gone? How long did you use Gengigel for?

And anyone here have improvements on their black triangles? Especially using Gengigel?
