Post tummy bug lactose intolerance.

My DD 2.2 has recently had a really horrid tummy bug (we all had it - nasty). Anyway, she had a recurrance of the diarroeah and the doctor said that they often get a bit lactose intolerant after a bug. So i cut out her formula feeds (she still has 2x500ml, one at mid day nap and one at bed time) and replaced with water. The runs stopped. Carried this on for a few days but now i have returned to milk her stools her horrid and she was clearly uncomfortable in the night last night.

Two questions: First, any experiences - how should i re introduce milk.

Thirdly: Does she really need formula, should i really be on cows milk now, and if so, how much.

Thanks guys

I would check with your GP but when this happened with my neice when she was about 2 1/2 I think they kept her lactose free for about 6 months. I will ring sis and ask her.

Just spoke to sis - their dd was 6 months as she had such a severe reaction. Sis says usual time is about 7 days but then to reintroduce it very gradually as this gives the body a chance to get used to the lactose and also lets you see what amount it can take IYSWIM.

As for formula I think if she's over 2 that just cows milk is fine now.

thanks dusty, i will give the doctor a ring tomorrow, but your suggestion sounds sensible. I wonder if it is worth introducing vitamins now, as i have sort of kept up with the formula because of the vitamin content, she does have quite a good diet imo, but i worry about her getting everything she needs.

I used to give my two abidec vitamins in their morning milk at about that age but this was 6-7 years ago so advice may have changed since then. i hope your dd feels better soon
