What is best - eating or drinking?

For a few days now I have been feeling weak and spaced out. I don't get to eat or drink properly throughout the day, though I get a dinner in the evening, and even though I have had some toast and beans and a small punnet of sushi I feel wobbly.

Simple answer is you've got to make time to eat and drink.

WigWamBam · 21/09/2007 15:00

Yep - you have to do both.

Why don't you get time? Is it just a case of needing to manage your time better, or are you over-stretching yourself?

Drinking should be easy - have a big bottle of water and keep slugging from it all day. But you really have to make time to eat as well, otherwise you'll make yourself really ill.

CatIsSleepy · 21/09/2007 15:02

yes you have to do both if you can!
food-wise maybe lots of healthy snacks that are quick to eat...fruit, dried fruit and nuts, yoghurt etc
was also going to ask why you don't have time to eat...

OrmIrian · 21/09/2007 15:05

It's not ideal to starve yourself but dehydrating is worse. Keep drinking. But also keep some snacks on you all the time. Fruit, nuts anything that can be carried about with you. Nibble regularly if you can't manage a big meal.

Thanks all.
Busy busy with 3 young ones to get ready and a trip to the school three times a day. Mountain of washing to do, sort and put away plus the dishwasher is on loads each day. Don't really go out and see anyone. Had some cereal this morning but then DS2 wanted it, so end up giving him his own and then some of mine but not as much as I usually do. Always seem to be sharing my food with him. There just always seems to be something more important to do than sit down and eat. No wonder I can't lose any of the weight I would like too. My body holds on to every last scrap of food i do get in case it is the last bit I get.

Have a bottle of water in the car so drink from that at every traffic light but don't drink anywhere near enough.

Not linked, I don't think, but somehow I fell carrying DS2 up the stairs and bashed my knee and now have aches all down my left side. Thanks goodness DS2 was okay. Missed the door frame by milimetres.

Ow! That does sounds as if your blood sugar might be low, or even dehydration. I'm in a similar position atm. Older DCs at school all day, DS#1 only in afternoons, trying to fit work in around this. Haven't been having lunch since he started school but I do have a good breakfast and I always drink plenty.

You need to take care of you too.

Breakfast just deosn't happen or is a piece of toast. Have 3 kids to feed, 2 lunches to do and everything just takes so long as the kids eat loads at breakfast.

If you can make three breakfasts for the kids, you can make four and have yours while they eat theirs, surely?

The washing will wait. The dishwasher will wait. Ten minutes while you eat a sandwich won't hurt. And the children won't spontaneously combust if they don't share your food! If they have their own food while you are eating, try to get them into the habit of eating their own, not yours.

I know it's sometimes easier said than done but you don't only owe it to yourself to keep yourself well, you owe it to your children.

NAB3 · 22/09/2007 14:32

I do try and eat when they eat but there always seems to be things that need doing. I do leave the washing, etc until we are back but we just end up running out of time for me.

When I do feel a bit iffy I wonder if I should just eat anything at all or whether a drink would do.

I have had breakfast and lunch today as DS1 and DD are at nanny's!

I usually drink juice when I feel funny from not eating because it has sugar in it and does not dehydrate you in the way cola does.

Only have two kids but when I am on my own with them at mealtimes I seem to be constantly getting them stuff, cutting up their food etc. They are usually down from the table and playing before I get a chance to eat more than a few mouthfuls.

I have built this into my timing. Eg used to have shower after breakfast while they were playing but now set alarm, shower before they are awake then eat my breakfast when they have finished and are playing.

New plan. I want to lose weight, esp as my rings have got a little tight. Have had a good breakfast today but only half a piece of cheese and toast for lunch. May have soup later.
