Lump in breast - catastrophising

Last week I found a lump in my breast during a regular breast check, its small and smooth and quite moveable (not massively so but you can definitely jiggle it about a bit). I saw my GP and he said it is most likely benign, but have referred me to the breast clinic to confirm this.

The logical part of my brain says its nothing as I am quite young (28) but the panic side keeps catastrophising that its something more serious - its a week till my appointment and I have to work ect so if anyone has any tips or nuggets of wisdom that might help keep me calm, I would really appreciate it :)

Hi, didn't want to read & run. Your GP has referred you "just in case". He most likely thinks it's benign so hopefully he's right. At least you are now in the system to be fully checked out.
I had a lump a few years ago. It turned out to be scar tissue from a seatbelt injury (car crash), caused a year previous. Huge relief, but the wait was scary so I sympathise.

Small, smooth and moveable are all good signs. Then there is your age and the fact that 9/10 breast lumps are benign.

That won't stop you worrying though and it's natural to do so.

Distract distract distract. I waited just over a week for my appointment and nearly went out of my mind with worry. It's the unknown.

Once at my appointment, the consultant immediately put my mind at rest, didn't stop me from crying the whole time. She felt the lump and said it felt like a cyst. I then had a mammogram and an ultrasound to confirm it. The cyst was drained there and then, uncomfortable but not painful and I went back to the consultant who confirmed that all was well, i was STILL crying (I have severe anxiety).

By far most, if not all, of the women left the clinic relieved that day. The staff we just lovely, which of course made me cry even more.

It's ok to be scared but the odds are very much in your favour.

Distract yourself, bach's rescue remedy and cammomile tea and if it gets too much ask your Dr for some diazepam. You are going to be OK

you're more likely to have a bad car accident on way to/from scan than it turn out this is something malignant that will give you future problems. Try not to stress.

Call the clinic and tell them.youre available at short notice if there is a cancellation. I did this and called just at the right time and got an appointment the next day.

Thanks for the tip @TheoriginalLEM, I rang today but they aren’t in till Tuesday now because of the BH so will try then.
