Why are you fat? Time for honesty!

COVID19 has brought obesity to attention. The greater risk of becoming seriously ill or dying with COVID19 if you are overweight cannot be denied.
64% of the UK is overweight or obese yet many seem to be in denial or not aware that they are in fact overweight.
Time for honesty- if you are overweight or obese, why? Is it will power? Money reasons? Lack of knowledge of health eating?
Have you been in denial about your weight? Has coronavirus alerted you to the fact you are indeed overweight?
I am speaking from experience as I was in denial for years - thought I could eat anything I wanted and didn’t put on weight. It wasn’t until I went with the friend to a WW meeting (only went to keep her company as she didn’t want to go on her own) and I got weighed and was shocked that actually I was overweight be a good 2 stone!
So- why are you fat and are you going to bother to do anything about it?

Wine

No exercise, and now I feel like I'm too fat to exercise so it's a vicious circle.

Boredom (signed off work with mental health issues)

And I really like food.

Hoggleludo · 18/05/2020 13:32

@onemouseplace

I've taken steroids every 4 hours for the last 7 years. At first I put on loads. Then realised I had to change my diet. As we don't metabolise sugar the same way anymore

I'm a size 8. It's hard work. But it's doable.

Hoggleludo · 18/05/2020 13:32

@onemouseplace

If you're taking high dose steroids daily. That's much much harder

So don't be too hard on yourself. Steroids make it incredibly hard. I mean stupidly hard.

3rdNamechange · 18/05/2020 13:37

Eat too much , don't move enough. Shift work , live alone so not always 'proper ' meals. I know how to lose it , done very well on WW in the past , just no motivation.

Hoggleludo · 18/05/2020 13:37

@Bagelsandbrie oh. I have Addison's disease too!

Drogonssmile · 18/05/2020 13:38

I'm not "fat" as such but I am about a stone and a half overweight and that's because I am an emotional eater. I don't smoke, can't drink and have no other vices so I see unhealthy food as a reward. I also can't control my portion sizes and when very unhappy I will binge eat chocolate :(

Hoggleludo · 18/05/2020 13:40

@QuacksInTheDark

Hugs. My friend is the EXACT same. Was a survivor of childhood abuse. Likes to be huge. Because it protects her from unwanted attention

I think she's beautiful however she looks because she's got a kind heart x

HaddawayAndShite · 18/05/2020 13:41

I eat the wrong things mainly carbs. And my portion sizes are not great and I absolutely use food as a comfort and coping mechanism. I also barely move on a daily basis (which I have been changing during lockdown and exercising more).

HeadOfHomeschool · 19/05/2020 22:04

Cheese. Wine. Beer. Carbs.

cyclingmad · 19/05/2020 22:16

I comfort eat, so I can weeks of being good nut soon as I'm upset or stressed I turn to food and downward spiral from there.

Bookmarking this thread to read later.

Basically, because I’m lazy, have a dodgy back that makes it hard to do any decent exercise, drink far too much alcohol (it’s homebrew so not part of the budget issue btw!) and eat far too much of the foods I have an intolerance to because they are cheap, quick and easy and we’re currently broke.

ADs and the pill don’t help.

Back on the low carb boot camp this month. It works for me

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 19/05/2020 22:37

I majorly comfort eat too btw, and the stuff I crave is usually the worst for me.

I’m normally a bit better than this btw, but being at work through all this, dealing with people happy to ignore lockdown while also being furloughed has kind of set off a self destructive cycle in me.

Gradually my life has got more sedentary.

I didn’t get a car until fairly recently. Before that I got public transport, or my bike.

My job is more and more computer based. I don’t need to move except to the toilet and break room. I can contact colleagues by skype, email. It wasn’t always like that- i’d be up and down the stairs to have a word with someone, getting up for a reference book, trip to the library, either in house or elsewhere for more research material.

Even standing behind a bar was more active.

Then when you’re young you spend free time walking round shops, walking round pubs, once a week dancing for a few hours. Going to friends houses, just generally moving.

Post children i drive to work, sit. Drive to pick up kids, sit and watch whatever activity. Home, cook tea. Collapse exhausted. Rinse and repeat. Food and shopping delivered as I don’t want to be dragging children shopping.

My step count must have decreased over the years from 15-20 000 a day to less than 3. I went on a walking holiday last year, 15k steps a day, ate out every evening, and came back half a stone lighter after 2 weeks.

i reckon it’s just general lack movement in my life compared to when I wasn’t fat. I definitely eat less (and better) now than I did then...

AgeLikeWine · 19/05/2020 23:00

When I was fat, I was fat for exactly the same reason as almost every other fat person :

Because I chose to be.

I ate too much calorie dense food and not enough fresh fruit & veggies. I consumed alcohol and sugary snacks every day. I was also very sedentary because I hated exercise.

The realisation that obesity is a choice and acceptance that I alone was responsible for what I chose to put in my mouth was the turning point for me. I am now a healthy weight, and while I will never enjoy going to the gym I do enjoy walking and I now walk at least 10km most days.

Sodamncold · 20/05/2020 05:56

@bluebluezoo
How old are your children?

RhymingRabbit3 · 20/05/2020 06:03

We actually eat pretty healthy meals but it's snacks which are the issue. We often have chocolate or ice cream or crisps in the evening. I also dont do nearly enough exercise.
I've cut out the evening snacks and reduced portion sizes to lose a bit, but not because of CV.

lboogy · 20/05/2020 06:08

I love carbs. I love the feeling of fullness from eating carbs. I eat until I'm really full. I can't eat small portions. But I also enjoy exercise. I'm headed out for a morning run and I type. I definitely eat all my burned off calories. And it annoys me that I can't exercise my way out of fatness.

Sodamncold · 20/05/2020 07:56

@Finewine1976

So current situation is enough of a motivation for you?

Finewine76 · 20/05/2020 09:02

Yes it is

NaturalCleaningParticles · 20/05/2020 09:08

Love food.
Hate feeling hungry, so don't last long on diets.
Eat a lot through boredom.
Think exercise is really boring and pretty much all the things I enjoy doing are sedentary.

Sodamncold · 20/05/2020 09:10

That’s fantastic then! Good luck

Qgardens · 20/05/2020 09:32

I eat fairly healthily with the family then eat more of the the wrong types of food that I really like on top of that. And too much of everything. Oh and alcohol.

In summary I just like food. And alcohol.

Did I mention I enjoy food. And drink?

Finewine76 · 20/05/2020 09:54

Thank you. Are you on a journey too

Sodamncold · 20/05/2020 10:22

To gain weight after being ill

indecisivewoman81 · 21/05/2020 16:09

Because I have no self control and an under active thyroid. I'm so fed up with the way I look. In my head I am a size 10 and will look great in anything; in reality I'm a chubby size 14 and only 5ft 2.

I'm always hungry and I can't seem to control it
