Has anyone used listerine mouthwash for fungal nails??

As per the title- and anyone had any success doing so??

I was going to buy curanail or similar OTC treatment from the chemist and came across a suggestion of using neat listerine mouthwash topically twice a day as an alternative.

Intrigued...

I’ve had fungal nails and I tried everything from tea tree to over the counter creams. Nothing worked. A doctor told me that nails are a very effective barrier, so it’s hard for infection to get in, but once it does nothing you apply externally can pass the nail in large enough quantities to be permanently effective.

I got a prescription for fluconazole, it cleared up brilliantly.

Listerine will make your nails smell minty fresh, but that's pretty much it.

I used Vick and it worked

DullPortraits · 15/05/2020 17:08

Thanks for your thoughts.. i interested to hear more about the using "vicks" as a successful treatment! How much and how often did u apply it? How long did it take to work?

Really do not want to have to take tablets if i can help it.

I used vicks on my feet, it works, and softens skin and nails too. Night and morning for an entire month mind! Possibly it’s the eucalyptus oil? I didn’t get proper vicks because Tesco do a vapour rub for a fraction of the price. I got through two pots. I have a little top up every now and again when the hard skin comes back.

BlueBooby · 15/05/2020 17:19

Oh I'm going to give the Vicks a try. I've got curanail but it takes 6 months to a year to work apparently, and I never remember to apply it.

DullPortraits · 15/05/2020 19:11

Apparently curanail - you have to keep applying until the nail grows out. Thanks for letting me know about the vicks or equiv

I used Vick’s for a year. A year! Don’t know why I persisted.

Honestly, over the counter stuff simply doesn’t work. You need something to attack it internally because the nail is a very effective barrier.

I used diluted Thyme oil and the nail eventually cleared up. No idea whether it might have done on its own though!

I did tea tree oil. I roughened the surface of my nail with an emery board and cut the nail as short as comfortable. Then a drop of tea tree oil, neat, onto the nail after a shower. Took a while but worked very well. No problems since.

roxyrocky · 15/05/2020 21:13

I used the Superdrug version which worked a bit but very slowly. Then I got some Vicks and it definitely works better. I use it at least once a day, twice when I remember. I'm prepared to be patient as I don't want to take pills.

Also tried a very expensive kit which was useless.

Good luck.

I ended up taking 6 months worth of Terbinafine and then it finally went away

myheartskipsskipsabeat · 15/05/2020 21:24

First time I used terbinafine which worked a treat.

Second time terbinafine did nothing so I tried everything and the only thing that worked was soaking my nail until soft and then applying neat hydrogen peroxide, it killed the fungus and then my new nail came through

TheCanyon · 15/05/2020 22:02

I tried all the over counter treatments for one toe, nothing shifted it til I got terbinafine, worked like magic but my fuck did it make my arse stink...

DullPortraits · 16/05/2020 08:30

Ha ha!
Thing is I really do not want to have to take tablets and willing to try anything to avoid. With no chance of a holiday this year am happy to keep my trotters covered in the UK but would like to be sorted for my holiday shoes next year if we are able to go abroad. Its horrible to see.

Thanks everyone
