DENTISTS - need your advice please!

My poor, poor mum is having awful dental problems.

I believe she has upper and lower partial plates. A couple of weeks ago she had to have an infected tooth removed (her face on one side was really swollen). Since it's removal she has a lump in her gum where the tooth was removed. The dentist needed to take another impression of her teeth and took one while this lumpy swelling was still there. Consequently her new plate doesn't feel comfortable. She has been back three times and he has tried to modify this plate. She still finds it very painful when eating food and has to remove it.
He now says there is little he can do until the swelling in the bone/gum has subsided and this can take 6 months.

She is despairing. What can she do? She is unable to find another dentist. NHS ones are like gold dust where she lives.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

BTW, she is undergoing chemotherapy at the moment so needs to have a good nutritional intake.
