Can you break a toe and not notice?

So my foot's been a bit irritating for a couple of days and then after a shower I noticed it's really bruised! My dm reckons it looks like her toe when she broke it.
Possible? Or just a weird bruise. Obviously I'm mildly interested as I'll probably stop my daily walk with the dc for a few days of it might be broken.

It's more annoying and aware than painful. Can't think of having dropped anything. Not swollen really.

Can you move it? If yes its not broken.

It is possible to break bones without noticing. I managed to break a vertebrae that wasn't picked up until a routine xray around a year later. I'd get that looked at, it might need resetting.

Yup. I've broken toes a couple of times - most recently tripping over a manhole by a friend's swimming pool - & it's quite easily done.

Then again, you could just have a nasty bruise!

Not much to be done, anyway. I only know about the pool manhole toe because I needed a clinic X-ray for a sprained wrist a week later, & asked if I could also have my swollen toe looked at.

The answer was 'ah yes, it's cracked. We could stick your foot in a pot if you like, but honestly if you're hobbling around on it it'll sort itself out, just don't play football for a bit.'

The other suggestion was to tape it firmly to the next toe, but again this was a bit late, given I'd been walking around on it with no problems.

Could be the angle but the area looks swollen? Swelling and bruising are classic signs of the inflammation stage of fractures

I have just tested moving my little toe and I can distinctly move it by itself, with no/minimal movement of the adjacent toes.

I think it's swollen until I put my foot down and then it isn't so much. It's weird to walk on. If the whole covid thing wasn't on I'd have probably got it checked at the minor injuries but I think I will just do the strap and rest thing as people say you can break it without realising. I'm often quite active with all the kids and house garden stuff
