Feeling scared. I think I may have had a seizure last night.

I’m usually fit and healthy but I woke up this morning feeling like I’d been hit by a truck. For about ten minutes I couldn’t feel my limbs and I just could not lift any part of my body off the bed. I also had what looked like vomit all round my mouth and on one of my pillows, and when I did manage to get of bed I was aching all over. My legs in particular are in agony and I’m having to shuffle round as it’s so painful. My left arm really hurts too and I can barely lift it.

I rang the doctors at 8am and was told all slots had gone for today so they’re going to fit me in tomorrow.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I’m really scared.

I did explain to the receptionist and she didn’t seem to think it warranted an emergency appointment today. I’ll call 111 as you suggested

Im no receptionist but your symptoms sound serious enough to warrant a hospital check to me

They do need checking. I hope you get seen today.

I would definitely mention your arm. Don't want to alarm you but I would get checked for a stroke/TIA better safe than sorry

I agree that you need to be seen urgently. Don’t understate your symptoms when you contact GP or helpline.

The receptionist didn't think it was an emergency? What? She needs a fucking appraisal.

Op, get thee to the doctors today, I regularly triage patients and would def consider this an emergency or at least for a clinical review today.

And this is why doctors' receptionists have a, generally undeserved, bad reputation. Because there are always some who think it is their job to triage.

You should have been advised to call 111 if they really couldn't fit you in, though a medically-qualified professional should, of course, have been consulted before the receptionist gave you the brush-off...

Thank you so much for the advice and kind messages.
I ended up phoning 111 yesterday and was told to go straight to A&E. I was seen immediately and had various tests to rule out a stroke (all negative thank goodness). My bloods, ECG and CT scan were all fine but I was kept in overnight and am still on the ward awaiting further tests as I’ve lost most of the sensation in my legs. I’m still quite scared but relieved that I’m in the right place and I’m being very well looked after.

I'm so glad you got some appropriate help op. When you feel better id definitely let the gp know the receptionist didn't think you were a priority. She needs retraining.

When you are well again you should issue a complaint about the receptionist, she needs a serious reprimand.

I hope you feel better and get some answers soon. Are you on a neuro ward? They're usually really good and efficient IME.

Yes, agree that when you feel better the receptionist issue should be dealt with - that is shocking. The practice manager is usually the best person to speak too. The NHS protocol is very clear (I'm epileptic) and they have been very very irresponsible.

Call 999 for an ambulance if someone:
• is having a seizure for the first time
• has a seizure that lasts more than 5 minutes
• has lots of seizures in a row
• has breathing problems or has seriously injured themselves
