Hi. I was at docs on Tuesday afternoon about a breast lump and my appointment has arrived today for next Tuesday afternoon. It seems really quick, so I;m panicking now.

This seems really quick for NHS!!!

could just be that your referal arrived at the same time as someone cancelled, your letter just ahppened to be in the right place at the right time. It also possible that waiting losts are short where you are.

At least now you haven't got too long to stress about it either

bonniej · 07/10/2004 12:16

Don't panic! I found a lump a few years ago and my appointment was through in less than a week. I was fine and you'll be fine too The NHS do sometimes get referrals quickly. I has an abnormal smear a few years ago and was seen within a week then as well.

The NICE guidelines recommend being seen within two weeks, 2wildbabies. As katzguk says, this is just your NHS Trust actually doing their job! The rationale is to put people's minds at rest - remember that a lot of referrals have an immediate reassuring outcome - and to make sure that the minority of cases requiring further treatment are dealt with quickly.
Missed your original thread - very best of luck.

MIne came really quickly. Mine turned out to be ok. I had my lump before dd so I felt abit odd about the consultant poking my boobies. Needless to say now I would probably sit in the waiting room with them out! I Hope it all goes well, its a really efficient process. Take care.

nutcracker · 07/10/2004 13:34

Don't panic 2wb, i had a breast lump about 6 years ago and i was sent to see somone the very next day.

Hope all goes well for you.

JoolsToo · 07/10/2004 13:43

They try to get them through as quick as they can to stop people worrying - imagine if you had to wait weeks and weeks - that wouldn't be good at all.

Hope you're appointment goes well - I'll be watching for your next post.

Good luck

hester · 07/10/2004 18:51

I work in a hospital and can promise you this is no reason to panic. There are national standards that we HAVE to provide an appointment within two weeks for suspected cancer referrals. So a quick appointment is no way an indication that your doc thinks your case is especially serious. Oh, and most of the referrals we get turn out NOT to be cancer. Don't worry and best of luck.

2wildbabies · 07/10/2004 19:46

you are all very right. I don't know why I am being so silly over this. I am usually a very strong person, but I've fallen to pieces over this. Roll on Tuesday.

2wbs, I would be feeling exactly as you do, in this situation. I'm sure I would have cracked up completely and I too am pretty strong (I think!) It must be very frightening even though you know that most lumps turn out to be nothing serious.

Will be thinking of you Tuesday, and admiring your bravery. You'll be fine!

thanks everyone.........I'm hoping mine is a breast mouse too!!! I have checked every morning and night to see if it has disappeared. I have been working on the theory that when you go the docs, you feel better the day of the appointment.....well, you never know!!!!!
