5mm kidney stone –does it have to come out!?

Hi all –wondering if anyone has any experience of kidney stones and can offer some insight into what's next!

I was recently in a walk-in centre for antibiotics for what I thought was severe cystitis. I did a urine sample and they found lots of blood in my wee and sent me straight to A&E where they found a 5mm kidney stone (in my kidney... this is relevant!). I then got the dreaded renal colic and was admitted overnight with the possibility of them fitting a stent to help it pass in the morning.

I obviously Googled uretal stents and read AWFUL things about them, so refused on the basis that the pain was being managed and I thought I might pass it on my own.

Long story short, it's been 5 weeks and although I have no pain; I had an ultrasound the other day and the 5mm stone is still in my kidney and has got a little bigger.

My appointment with the consultant isn't until 26th March, but I'm now absolutely terrified it will move and I'll have the agonising renal colic again; or I'll have to have a stent fitted! The ultrasound technician was lovely, but she said they don't tend to laser smaller stones (which I guess mine is at 5.2mm?).

I'd love to hear anyone's experiences of a similar situation? I guess it'll have to come out even though it's no longer causing me any pain as it could cause infection etc? Eek!

Any advice greatly appreciated!
