just went for a smear and told i have a cervical erosion. i am on the pill and this is mean't to be a common condition. but never heard of it before and now worried about it being a sign of infertility / cancer etc.

anyone hhave any experience with this i would be grateful to get some advice. thinking i should stop the pill now, its been 9 years with a 1.5 year break.

hi.
i have a cervical errosion too. it really isn't anything to worry about. it might be caused by hormones but not necessarily connected to the pill. ask you dr. there is no connection with cancer or infertility as far as i understand. basically what it means is

oh hang on. i can't type one handed like this. i'll try and get the baby off to sleep and i'll get back to you. but don't worry.

right
I thinks she's off.

It's like you know the skin on the inside of your lips (gum) is different to the skin on the outside of your lips, well its a bit like that on the inside of your cervix compared with the outside (ie in the vaginal canal). With a cervical errosion, you have some of the inside tissue on the outside lip of the cervix. Cervical errosion is also called cervical ulceration - just like you get ulcers on your gum, you can on that tissue on the cervix.

I thinks I've had this for a long time - I bled (spotting really)in early pregnancy with all 3 children and there was no reason for it other than the cervix. It gave no problems with the pregnancies or the births. Since I had my last baby, I have been spotting on and off for quite a while and that is to do with the errosion. Sometimes it doesn't bleeed though. I can feel it a bit - like a small cut inside but that's becasue I'm ultra sensitive to it now.
I have been refered to a consultant who is just eliminating other factors before she treats it. The treatment is apparantly very quick and effective. It gets treated with some kind of gas which removes the tissue that shouldn't be there and that's all fixed. I'm expecting to have that done in a few months.

I do think it's hormone based but it isn't dangerous - your smear won't be affected by it. Chat to your doctor if you are worried about the pill though.

thanks cadders, that was reassuring. must think about coming off the pill though, just do not want another pregnancy until at least a years time so must be careful!

forever more, please dont worry, i was told i have a cervical erosion, its very common in people who have given birth or take the pill, since being told i have an erosion, i have had a normal smear result, theres really no point in coming off the pill because of it.
