do you think this could be an underactive thyroid?

i have been gaining weight rapidly over the last year or so despite eating the same food, and quite healthily i might add. i dont overeat and dont consume masses of fast food, well none at all actually, and eat sensibly. i have rocketed from a size 10/12 to a 16 and struggling to fit into 16s now . despite dieting to the point of almost starving myself for 3 months i did not lose any weight at all.
my ankles are swollen to the point where i dont have ankles anymore.
i feel tired all the time and depressed one minute, happy and fine the next.
i frequently feel sick, but after 12 hours sleep i feel better but could still sleep more.
i have zero sex drive, i mean literally none. i cant remember the last time i fancied a bit . i dont seem able to force myself either.

i know its a long shot but i wondered if my thyroid might be the issue here. have booked to see doctor on fri morning but wanted opinions before i go and see her so i dont make a complete tit out of myself.
just want to feel normal again.

I recently found out that I have an underactive thyroid. I had exactly the same similar symptoms to you and after months of going to the doctor and being prescribed iron tablets for anaemia, I asked to be tested for underactive thyroid - which I was found to have. Other symptoms include dry skin and hair, and slow reflexes. I have been on medication for a few months now which are improving things a bit, I am definitely less tired. Hope things work out for you.

ah thats interesting. thanks frankie3 (and totaleclipse of course!). i 'm not sure if hair and skin are dry tbh as hair is bleached to within an inch of its life and my skin is dry with eczema anyway! sound a right sorry state dont i?
have you found the weight is coming off too? how did they test you? was it a blood test?
