"Me Time" - How do you indulge yourself?

With all the recent threads on working mums, sahm's etc., it seems clear that we're all short of time to ourselves because of the multitude of demands we try to meet.

I've been thinking about practical ways to make some quiet time for myself. Seems I run from task to errand to chore, and any optional time is used for playing with dd. Do any of you have a routine that regularly allows for "me" time, or do you (like me) simply hope that you can grab a moment here or there? When you have time to yourself, how do you use it (other than mumsnet )?

I wonder if I sometimes overeat because it's one way I can "treat" myself, and do exactly what I want. Maybe I wouldn't feel so compelled to comfort eat if I indulged myself in other ways? Have the rest of you got this sussed? How do you make time for yourself? What do you do to indulge yourself? Would be curious to know about big special occasion indulgences, and also the smaller day to day stuff.

I insist that at least every other Fri or Sat night, I lock myself in the bathroom! I have a long soak in the bath, whilst reading and usually eating, along with a face pack, hair pack, shave legs, paint nails, pluck eyebrows etc!

I am NOT to be disturbed for anything less than a continent shifting

codswallop · 01/10/2004 13:27

bath

carla · 01/10/2004 13:31

Don't try and pull the wool over our eyes, cods - we all know it's hoovering

this will make some of you cringe perhaps but my best 'me' time is to go for a long run or a trip to the gym/swimming pool where I don't have a set time that I have to be back by. Does that make sense? What i mean is I get to do these things when DS is at play school but then I'm always clock watching. When i can do it without a care about the time, that is pure luxury!

Second best 'me' time (or maybe ever first best) is morning sex with DH when DS has stayed overnight with his grandparents.

Having a bath/shower around 9.00 then going to bed with a bowl of strawberries and a glass of milk and watching something on TV which is really light/funny, meaningless.....a good one at the moment is the Farm. Alternatively, go shopping in town by yourself and just wander and go to the perfume counters and stuff.

krocket · 01/10/2004 13:44

spook,

ps. v jealous of you having a DVF dress

spook · 01/10/2004 13:46

Oh Krocket-it's not a real one! I wish. Single motherhood and DVF don't really go together at the moment. One day....

krocket · 01/10/2004 13:48

ah, oh well, bet it's nice anyway I love wrap dresses , forever lusting after the ones of DVF website

My "me" time is spent at the gym as well.I don't work on a Monday or Friday, so while my DS's are at school, I go to my heath club which has a spa. This is usually my treat after a 45min work out and a 1000 metre swim.
It does me the world of good !!!

Tommy · 01/10/2004 13:57

My Dh let me go to Tescos on my own last weekend so I could have some time to myself.....
Apart from that, every so often I buy a magazine and read it in the bath with a glass of wine. Seems a bit crap really but don't have money to go to gym or spa!

poppyseed · 01/10/2004 14:09

Gym here too.
The things that I have to do to beable to get there in the evenings is ridiculous though...
After an hours workout and a steam/sauna/swim I feel like a new woman!

Angeliz · 01/10/2004 14:17

Sit on here

woodstock · 01/10/2004 14:32

I get a really nice haircut every 6 weeks without fail.

Aside from that, I can't really think of anything.

oxocube · 01/10/2004 16:05

Going to woods/ heathland for long walk with dog and NO CHILDREN! No one shouting, whining, fighting, demanding, just me and dog and miles of field and trees! Bliss

conker · 01/10/2004 16:09

collision · 01/10/2004 16:12

Having an early night with something like Friends on the TV, reading OK magazine and a big piece of cake and a cup of tea!! Bliss

Skate · 01/10/2004 16:14

Go for a swim. Looking forward to going in the steam room again too now that I'm no longer pregnant.

Otherwise, the only time I get real 'me time' is if I go out on a scheduled girlie night - out for a meal or something. Oh, and I sometimes see a friend on a Sat afternoon. Next week we are going wedding dress shopping for her which is great fun!

blossomhill · 01/10/2004 20:48

My favourite ways to relax are:-

shopping (a spend up always makes me feel good)

Meeting up with friends while the kids are at school for coffee/lunch

Going on a girls night out - don't do it enough!

emmatmg · 01/10/2004 20:52

I get a weekly £100+ session of retail therapy. I get to stroll around picking and choosing whatever I fancy.

Unfortunatley it's in Asda

Other than that, you're all with me now during my "me" time.
