Gynea appointment for coil removal - what happens as have been sent info about day surgery

Hi

I was referred by my GP to the hospital as she can't get my coil out.

Got a phone call last week offering me 0845 or 0945 for an appointment which was consistent with my understanding that it was a quick job,

when I got the NHS letter confirming my appointment with the "Day Surgery" ward it starts talking about local anesthetics and hysteroscopy - neither of which I've even been consulted about.

I am trying to get hold of them for clarification but they are not answering the phones.

So I did wonder if anyone here has experienced similar?

I'd imagine it's a fairly standard letter, covering several bases. Keep trying to get through, but I wouldn't worry too much.

I had mine out once under a quick general anesthetic as they couldn't get it out (it was in Germany though! Not sure if they do that on the NHS). Often though the hospital are much more experienced at removing them and can get ones out that the GP gave up on.

@ACautionaryTale day surgery units in hospital deal with mirena insertion/ removal, endoscopy and day surgery that don't need overnight stay at hospital. Going at a day surgery unit does not mean it is going to take a lot of of procedure, it could be in and out as well. As for hysteroscopy, it is just a camera to look inside your uterus , may be to look for your mirena because your GP can't find it (possibly because the mirena threads curled around itself). As for local anaesthesia- please take it, apart from a handful of women most find hysteroscopy painful or uncomfortable and would really wish to be in your position where hospital is offering without asking . Even with all this you could be out of the hospital within 30-40 minutes.

The point is no one discussed with me what it was going to involve first!

@ACautionaryTale I understand your problem but did your GP referred straight to the procedure or a consultant first because if your GP did a straight consult for procedure then it was her job to explain rather than the hospital. You can still contact your GP if it helps.

I also remember when I had my procedure done there was another woman who was referred straight from her GP. My consultant explained the whole procedure on the day itself before getting the documents signed. I found that odd but the woman was okay since she knew what the procedure entailed.

Yeah - my gp referred me direct. No point trying to speak to her before the 19th feb as it’s about a five week wait even for a telephone appointment!
