No period for 5 months for 14 year old - normal?

14 year old DD's last period was in August and she's not had another one since, until a couple of days ago. She's previously been reasonably regular (skipping odd month, but nothing like this).

Also, up till now her periods have been accompanied with crippling pains (she's twice been sent to the medical room at school; if at home she basically just has to lie in bed and take painkillers) but this one has been very trouble free.

DD is very happy about both the lack of periods and lack of pains, but perversely I am wondering if these changes are "normal" at her age, or whether I should worry?

When did her periods start? They can be irregular I think at the start? Definitely take her to the GP though.

They started nearly 4 years ago, so a while! Didn't know if they were more likely to be irregular with her being comparatively young?

Has she lost weight OP? That could be one reason.

There is a link to periods and weight and if you fall below 10% of your normal weight this can cause periods to stop - so could this be a factor for your DD?

Is she doing dance / sports ?

Worth a trip to the GP, they might do some blood tests to see if they can find what's causing it.

Any chance she's pregnant? (Sorry)

RedskyAtnight · 24/01/2020 20:30

Thanks for responses. She's not lost any weight. She did start doing more sports in September, but we're talking about a girl who previously didn't do anything now doing an hour or two a week! So not sure that will have made a difference.

Definitely not pregnant :)

We have a GP appointment about something else in a couple of weeks, so think I will bring this up at the same time. Thanks.

What's her diet like? Iron deficiency can cause periods to stop.

Has she taken any period stopping medication for holidays like norethisterone? My dd took these in the summer and she then didn’t have a period for about 3 months but all since returned to normal.
