Antibiotics for renal dilation - how given?

Hi. At the 20 week they found a mild dilation of my baby's kidneys. They said if still present at birth would probably mean baby would need prophalactic (sp?) antibiotics for the first 10 days or so. Has anyone had this? How were they administered - orally or by drip? Is there an option for me to take antibiotics immediately prior to delivery to get some into her via me to start off? I'm 24 weeks now and would like to have a home birth so trying to understand the implications. Thanks!

The antibiotics will be given orally in a small dose once per day until your lo can have an ultrasound scan of the kidneys to see if it is still present. It really shouldn't be a problem regarding homebirth.

Thanks LaDiDaDi that's really helpful. So could be required to go on a drip but won't know until after that ultrasound by the sound of things. And I can look forward to that homebirth!

Oh, even if the dilatation is still present the antibiotics would be oral to prevent infection. Only if your lo got ill with an infection would they need IV.
