I've got a 13 day old baby who's on both formula and breast milk (mainly breast milk) and across the last 3-4 days she has been struggling/straining to get her poo out and is in severe discomfort.

She is dirtying her nappy after every feed however the strain has become worse and worse to the point where she is being sick because of it. She is not in need of any urgent care, however is their anything we can do for to help/ease her pain? Also is this quite common in newborns?

I would call your midwife or health visitor. Not something I've experienced with either of mine. Hope your dd feels better soon.

We had that, I'm so sorry she's in discomfort, it is horrible to see it. YouTube belly rubbing, its a full circle, half circle thing which helps. Also have her on her back and cycle her legs like she's riding a bike. Really young babies sometimes don't poo as they use up all the milk. Our dd has a cow's milk allergy which presented with colic and painful poos. After stopping having milk myself her colic eased. A phone call to the health visitor is best to keep them upto date and to give you peace of mind! Good luck x
