Because I would like some examples of responsible drinking as I think I am on the verge of starting to drink too much too frequently. An idea of real-life responsible approaches to it would be very helpful. Thank you.

I love my red wine and drink far too much. I am trying to cut down and managed to go without on Mon, Tues, Wed, but had a bottle last night. Don't feel any different this morning than I did on the other mornings without drink.

Not good for my liver though or my purse. doesn't help that DH is the same, we seem to view wine time as adult time when the kids are in bed. Problem is with these large glasses nowadays a bottle doesn't seem to go that far so we can kid ourselves that it isn't that much, when in reality it is a shed load of wine for one night.

I've put on a bit of weight round my middle which I think is wine-related. I've noticed lots of ladies of a similar age with slim legs and top halves, but rotund middles, I wonder if this is all due to wine?

FoghornLeghorn · 24/08/2007 09:42

I am what is classed as binge drinker - ATM I probably have 4 glasses of wine a week as we are staying with my parents and it's so hard to say no when there is case after case of wine - when DH and I are at home I wont drink at all unless we are entertaining.
If I go out or to family/friends for an evening I drink excessively - 3+ bottles of wine in one go

BUT went on holiday recently & having stressful time family, so thought 'sod it' and went straight back to my teenage drinking habits. not good. so drinking loads, every day. So copla days ago, stopped again. I know it's the only way for me. But lordy do I feel so unbelievably washed out and exhausted. How do you speed up the de tox? I'm knackered, and sure it's withdrawal

The more i drink, the more I want to. I'm an avid tee totler. Again. as of 2 days

FoghornLeghorn · 24/08/2007 09:49

I never get pissed. I hate the feeling and the hangover's worse.

sauce · 24/08/2007 09:57

I read somewhere that a bottle of wine is 600 cals. Seems alot. I can easily drink half a bottle with a meal. Not any more, though! I've got to count points for WW! Argh.

hellobello · 24/08/2007 10:17

I don't think it helps to count the calories of alcohol. For now I am far heavier than I've ever been, but hey, I'm middle aged and have 2 children. I am far less active, more tired, and drink far too much. You are so right, FioFio that a glass of wine with only 1 unit would be tiny! They decided on the unit measures when wine was 9% and beer about 3.5%. Most wine now is at least 12% and often more like 13.5% and beer is often 5%. I used to assume that a bottle contained 6 units, but they now contain about 10.

A small glass remains the same size, but what's in it gets stronger and stronger! If we are used to having a glass of wine and the glasses stay the same size, it is very hard and frankly confusing.

ooowwwwwww......

BigBearistheBigBear · 24/08/2007 10:21

sandyballs, I have good, slim arms and legs but a big fat wobbly tummy. I thought it was the effect of two pregnancies, but you're telling me it's my precious wine! ARGH.

BarbieGirl · 24/08/2007 10:36

This is an interesting thread as I have been thinking over the last few weeks how much alcohol I drink.

I used to drink a bottle of wine on a Friday night and Saturday night the same. Nothing during the week, however I am drinking nearly every night which is due to stress. I can't handle stress at all, so end up cracking open a bottle every night. At one point I was drinking a bottle of red wine every night.

I am thinking of stopping completly but as others have said on this thread, I can't imagine my life without alcohol.

Breaking the habbit is the hardest. I have thought about going to the gym or joining a class in the evenings instead of staying in drinking but my DH works shifts, so one week I am stuck in the house with the kids, so can't go out in the evenings, especially as the kids are in bed at 7pm.

I really want to stop drinking. I know it's a problem. I wish I was the type of person that only drinks one or two small glasses of wine a night but once I start I can't seem to stop. I think the best way forward for me is to stop completly, but I don't know how. To embarrassed to see GP.

OrmIrian · 24/08/2007 11:08

The worst thing for me when I drink comtinuously, even quite moderately, is that I get depressed. Never used to. So it's important to have days off.

I'm not sure that drinking causes the waist thickening - I think that fat or retained fluid tends to accumulate there when there is any to accumulate. And the apple shape thing tends to be hereditary. Mum is and always has been virtually tt and was very very slim but once she reached her 40s she started to get bigger and bigger round the middle.

ernest · 24/08/2007 11:20

bg and others, you might find this book helpful. I did, and his method has also helped millions give up smoking. Worth a fiver. Saying that tho, you shouldn't be embarrassed to go to gp, tho I know I wouldn't myself, hense the book

Othersideofthechannel writes: I have a vacuum pump to avoid giving myself the excuse to finish the bottle over a couple of nights so it doesn't go bad

Funny it's normally blokes who need a vacuum pump after too much vino

ah well in that case you don't need to read it. good book tho.

in that case ff, what do you do when out drinking? If i go out I feel forced to order endless glasses of water, as I don't like sickly fruit juices or fizzy drinks, but feel pressured to get another even when I don't want one, as they're all drinking cos they want more booze, not cos they're thirsty, how do you manage that?
