Loss of muscle strength

So my mum has lost all the strength in her fingers then hands then arms and now needs to use a wheelchair (over the course of about 2 years) I'm so scared. Neurologists only treat symptoms but no cure. For anyone with a immobile parent, relative or friend: is this how it started?

Do you know what the cause is? Has she had MRIs of brain and spine?

I don't know much but am seeing neurology atm. I think it will depend on cause and even then the speed can vary a lot. Can you with her to an appointment if you don't already then maybe ask them?
