Late period but not pregnant

I'm now 6 days late on my period but I've taken 2 pregnancy tests and both are negative.
I've had cramps all week and a general feeling of my period starting but still no sign of it at all.

What can cause this? I'm so confused and starting to worry.

You probably just ovulated late this cycle, or didn't ovulate at all. There are 2 main phases in your cycle - pre-ovulation can vary in length quite a bit between women and between cycles. The bit post - ovulation until your period is called your luteal phase and is much more predictable, and almost always 10-16 days unless you're on fertility treatment. So, for example, if you were ill around the time you'd normally ovulate, your ovulation could have been postponed. Once you've popped the egg out, your body will have its standard luteal phase to go through before you get your period.
