Delayed period after pill

Is it normal for your periods to be delayed when you come of the contraceptive pill? Any experiences?

My last period (final one after stopping pill) was 16th July. I did have sex during my ovulation period, however I have taken a pg test and it is negative.

The worrying thing is I have felt sick for a couple of weeks on and off throughout the day (like I did when pg with ds), my boobs have got bigger, I keep getting itermittent period type pains, I have a little more clear discharge than normal, I have been going very lightheaded this past week. These are all my symptoms of pg however a Clear Blue Digital test has shown negative which I did on Fri (5dys overdue)

Is it possible that I might just be having a bit of a phantom pg? Does that happen in humans? I have stopped the pill to TTC but have not been desperate for it to happen right away so it's not a longing to be pg type of thing.

I am off on my hols in a week and will be gutted if I come on then as I more or less planned coming off the pill to co-incide with me NOT being on my period when I am holiday!!!

When I cam off my pill I was all over the place. Maybe give it a few more days and do another test.

Chloe55 · 20/08/2007 13:40

It's just weird though because when I came off the pill for ds I more or less went straight into a regular cycle. I will be so cross if I come on on holiday!

I have just had the same problem.

I came off the pill at the begining of July and did not have a period until Mid-August.

I got obsessed with the fact that I may be pregnant - sore boobs, v tired, feeling sick but got a negative test (I am not planning to get pregnant).

I was just coming around to the fact that I may be pregnant when I came on and was quite disappointed!

It took about six weeks - I have not had another cylce so I can't comment further other than when I came off the pill to conceive first time around my cycle was really screwed up so I think you need to give it a couple of months to settle down.

when I stopped the combined pill my cycle came back straight away. However, when I stopped the mini-pill my cycle didn't go back to normal for a few months! I had period-like pains on and off but no period for ages! The good thing about the mini pill for me is that it completely stops my periods - but when I come off it, I have no idea when my first period will arrive.

Mine's the combined pill, Cilest to be precise

I had been taking microgynon - it just doesn't suit me at all - hence me stopping taking it this time.

  • Still having some bouts of nausea and a bit of stomach/back cramping kinda like I am about to come on then nothing happening. I could sleep for a week.

DH says I am to do another test on Sat if I still haven't come on by then, we are going on holiday a couple of days after so I guess I need to know for def before I go.

Thing is, I showed up positive at a week late with ds so I'd have thought I would probably do the same this time round. All seems a bit odd though.

Has anyone shown a negative result when they have actually been pregnant?

Can I join in.........same thing....annoying wait!!!

Last pill taken 19th July
Period (CD1) on 22nd July as expected as body didn't know I'd come of it at that time.

If I was on the pill still, I'd have come on Sunday but nothing. Been feeling like I'm coming on for about 2 weeks, last week the worst. Still nothing and on CD31 so not quite as late as you yet.

I believe some people don't have periods at all for couple of months, others have periods all over the place for up to 9 months after. I conceived straight after coming off the pill last time but I know that's not the case this time as I SOOOO feel like period is coming. I've had SOOO many symptoms since coming off the pill - feeling sick, tired, metal mouth, off some food/drink at one point, white spots on nipples, sore boobs etc etc. Anyway, a lot of that has gone now, I'm pretty sure it was wishful thinking on my part.

I'm glad we've got a thread where we can all moan about waiting for our period (if that's ok?)

I hate to say but I wouldn't get my hopes up too much. I've been on the TTC threads and it really does seem quite normal to have a lot of pg symptoms but not be and period delayed after coming off the pill!

looneytune · 21/08/2007 16:15

By the way, I'm DESPERATE to conceive so I know how horrible the waiting is! And yes, a lot of us have phantom pg's I even has stuff coming out of my boobs the other day!!!

MrsPuddleduck · 21/08/2007 16:21

looneytune and chloe55 - I hope you get the results you want this time.

I am now thinking of TTC - but realistically can't really start until June next year... how's that for a wait!

looneytune · 21/08/2007 16:26

Thanks, me too. I'm actually pretty sure I'm not pg so just want my period to arrive. Long story but even though I'm only 31, I'm at hight risk of very early menopause and am scared so period arriving will help. Mum thought she was pregnant at 29 due to no period and it turned out to be because she'd started the menopause! I now know the same thing happened with my grandma when she was my age and also my aunty in her late 30's/early 40's. Fingers crossed this doesn't happen to me!!!

Chloe55 · 21/08/2007 16:27

Hiya, yes feel more than free to jump on board the waiting game! It took me 12mths to conceive ds and every month leading up to that I would convince myself I was pg, I actually didn't have a clue I was when I found out - it was DH who made me take the test.

It also didn't really enter my head this month in all seriousness until I started getting extremely irrational with DH about stupid stuff but I put that down to PMT. I had to leave work early on thur and took fri off because I nearly passed out and felt like throwing up. It was dh who advised me to take the test - and it's actually dh who is convinced again this time. I keep telling him there's no way (but I wonder if I'm trying to convince myself of that) but then another symptom creeps up unexpetedly.

The annoying thing is I actually planned my coming off the pill so as not to be on my period for the hols!

Why do we all go bonkers in the head when trying to conceive (well some of us).

It took me 12 months to conceive last time I cam off the pill. I never went back on it between ds1 and ds2 for that very reason and conceived in the first month of trying second time around so you never know!

In lieu of the fact that I intend to try and have another in the future I have come off the pill altogether at least that way when I do start trying I will know my cycle etc.
