Horrendous pain in ankle when going up and down stairs....

Thanks to some horrendously muddy footpaths, I lost my footing this morning while out with the dogs and somehow managed to save myself from falling on my arse! Since then, I'm fine walking around apart from a slightly dullish ache in my ankle, but I just went to go upstairs and the pain was excruciating. I had to come down on my bum, as weight bearing was just too much.

I've put an ankle strap on (I sprained my other ankle a couple of years ago), but there is no swelling or bruising to show for it..... just this awful pain when I went upstairs. I'm wondering if it's a tear of some kind....... anyone else had similar?

Where in the ankle is it? Front/back/inside/outside?

The only pain I know like that (but from different types of accidents) is in the back, in the Achilles' tendon.

The pain is on the outside and inside, not front or back. No better this morning, so had some naproxen that were lurking in the cupboard.

Sounds like a sprain to me with pain in that area, it's unlikely you'd be walking on it if it was a tendon gone. Unlikely but not impossible, I did have a friend once who walked on a completely ruptured achilles tendon for a whole week.
