I've been perscribed 3 diff antibiotics which haven't worked. This is viral isn't it?

I've been unwell for weeks, sore scratchy throat on one side accompanying sporadic ear pain, swollen gland also on the same side. Fatigue and general feeling of being unwell. Currently have a poor immune system so not fighting things off too quickly.

After three weeks I'd had enough and went to my GP who said there was some white on the back of my throat and my ear is quite inflamed inside. Amoxicillin perscribed.

After 5 days no improvement so went back, different GP said amoxicillin wasn't working so perscribed penicillin.

That hasn't worked well either and my ear seems to be worse. No puss or visible gunk but hot and painful.

Perscribed gentamicin antibiotic ear drops. No improvement from those after several days either.

Blood tests done and results fine other than elevated wbc (lymphocytes) which doctor said was in line with me fighting something off.

Done a bit of my own research and according to the internet, lymphocytes increase when you have a viral infection and not usually bacterial. In cases of bacterial infections I've read that lymphocytes decrease and neutrophils increase.

Obviously antibiotics won't do a thing for viral infections so I'm quite gutted that I've taken two courses and then AB ear drops for nothing.

This is viral isn't it?

You could ask them to do a throat swab and send it off to culture. That'll let you know what it is...

Sounds exactly like what I've had, I even had the white bits on my throat and am prone to bacterial tonsillitis however this did improve without antibiotics (I had no time for a doctors appointment) it's been 3 weeks 2 days now though and I still feel awful/drained but assuming, like you it's viral. Maybe take some probiotics to counteract the antibiotics

I'm planning on asking for a swab to be taken just to rule out anything bacterial but I'm 99 percent sure at this stage that it isn't. I usually respond well to AB's, when they're needed.

Sorry to hear you've been suffering too happycamper, thanks for sharing that though as I was yet to hear somebody else say they've had the same. I'm reassured it's nothing too serious. Did you have the ear bother too?

Actimel probiotics are on sale at my local Tesco so I've stocked up on those to replace the good bacteria that has been wiped out with the AB's Smile
