omg ali

you poor thing

do you have any idea what he reacted to?

glad he is home

foxinsocks · 15/08/2007 21:22

sorry kerry - x-posted with you there while I was reading the thread!

3Ddonut · 15/08/2007 21:25

ALi, just seen this....how awful for you, just glad that little James is well now, you and your sister have done a fantastic job!!!! It's never nice to see anyone in that situation and I can't imagine how awful it would be if it were your own child, just be grateful that he is over it. Well done.

tatt · 15/08/2007 21:28

ali I'm so glad he's OK. At the time you just get on with it, the shock hits you when they are safe again.

Sorry I wasn't around to see this. Please, please people if ever anyone asks for advice tell them to use the epipen. If you are ever in doubt about using it it is much safer to do so, especially with an asthmatic child. There may not be time for an ambulance to get to you. Adrenaline has never harmed a child having a reaction, lack of it has harmed children.

alibobins · 15/08/2007 21:29

well he is allergic to eggs fish and peanuts.

He had pork dinner all made fresh at my mums but she has got a cat and he was funny last time ( i posted a thread in allergies but can't do links )but nothing else unless it was contamination they said i may never find out he's got a follow up wiyh consultant in three weeks.

Its a good job mum only lives two mins away so i came home when the first blotch came.

Can't believe this happened it really sets me back its hard enough to deal with it all as it is.

I can't help thinking what if ?????

OP posts:
3Ddonut · 15/08/2007 21:32

Ali, you need to think this out and get it straight'in your head' but think of the positive, you knew what to do, you did the right thing, you have the necessary equipment (epipen) to deal with this, as he gets older he will know how to deal with it himself. You did well and James is OK.

foxinsocks · 15/08/2007 21:32

the shock must be awful

but wrt the what if?

like Kerry said, you managed it very well. You gave him the epipen, the ambulance was called....you did everything right ali.

I guess it serves as a reminder to carry the Piriton and the epipen wherever you are with him (if you don't already) but hopefully, once the shock wears off, you'll see you did a good job.

alibobins · 15/08/2007 21:41

They did say I should have given it at the first sign of tongue swelling but i didn't i waited

others have said to wait till they have trouble breathing or go faint. So many different people give so different advice.

Sorry gyes just need somewhere to release my worries and concerns without being looked down upon.

OP posts:
tatt · 15/08/2007 21:47

ali we didn't find out what caused the last reaction either. The adrenalin worked, if it happens again you'll be more comfortable about using it. You're a good mum, it can be really hard to get an epipen and you'd got one there when you needed it. If you don't have a second pen its a good reason to get one from your doctor. And you'll never get a gp moaning about the cost of the pen again

Another parent suggested to me that I see it like a traffic accident, because bad reactions are less frequent than traffic accidents in children. You do your best to avoid it but like traffic accidents sometimes nothing you do can prevent it. At least there is a treatment.

Worth listing everything he ate before you forget in case he needs testing for any new foods.

3Ddonut · 15/08/2007 21:52

Ali, you were given conflicting advice and you DID YOUR BEST! Didn't you? You did! If (Heaven forbid) it happens again, you will feel more in control of the situation and be more confident in administering the epipen.

You did well, it's a horrific situation to be in and you coped and James is OK (thanks to his Mummy)

We're here for you, if you need to talk it out then do.

3Ddonut · 15/08/2007 21:53

Sorry just read your post again, who's looking down on you??? YOU are a farking HERO! You saved your little boy! That's a hero in my book.

alibobins · 15/08/2007 21:53

Are these people Mother's? I find it hard to believe that anyone would not recognise what a shock you've had. Ignore them, listen to us!!!!!!

You've had a shock and should be allowed to deal with that in your own way.

well said Kerry!!!!! I'm going to bed just now (well 20mins!) Sleep well Ali.

alibobins · 15/08/2007 22:09

He's got five or six epi-pens don't know how we managed that gp must have taken a fancy to me lol.

He's under a good asthma allergy consultant who diagnosed all his allergies and this will be the 4th anaphlatic reaction

1- was his first so didn't know what it was.

2- was at gp's they gave epi-pen

3- dh gave epi-pen as instructed to do so by 999

all the others he recovered straight away and screamed when given epi-pen this one semmed to last forever and it must have been a good hour before he cried

Don't know what i would have done without you lot you gave amazing advice and really helped in a horrible situation.

god just saw this alibobins,so glad your ds is ok now, what a scary experience.

My ds has allergies and epipen aswell and I can so understand your reaction. You did so well.

tatt · 15/08/2007 22:21

I know Kerry most posters did but you really want everyone to say the same thing.

We've had a paediatric allergist and he did say if in doubt use the pen. But when you know the gp will complain about the cost and it doesn't at first seem too bad and your child doesn't like needles (and whose kid does?) it's natural to hesitate. Then you experience a bad reaction and, hopefully, how much difference adrenaline makes and you never hesitate again.

Sometimes the professionals - who see only the reactions that end in hospital - forget that many reactions are dealt with at home and never get to them.

Ali if you'd been in a car crash people would understand you being upset. This was just as sudden and just as unexpected.

Off to bed myself now - you'll feel better when you've slept on it.

Sorry Kerry- went to bed

I work literally 2 mins away from docs and ds comes with me it wasn;t long after his first reaction, he had eaten something another child hadf dropped and came out in blotches gave him piriton and that didn;t help so took him to see my gp. He was sick there and where the sick touched him he blistered he was only ten months
so gp gave epi-pen.

I do feel so much better today my little james seems back to his normal self.

He's just left with dry skin where the worst swelling was.
