Stomach pain and obesity

Hi All

Just after some advice I am double what my body weight should be. Have been this way on and of for a few years.

Recently I have a job where I sit in a chair for 7 or so hours. I have had a similar job previously . Been going on a month .

I find as the day goes on i get stomach/bowel pain . Lots of wind .

I have had a clear pelvic scan , abdominal scan , have no gallbladder , lots of blood tests including CA125 , celiac screen all clear. Clear endoscopy and colonoscopy
2 years ago. Doctor us referring me to a gastro specialist for investigations for possible IBS.

Could it be my weight ? I also have lower back pain most days .

On the weekend when not sitting things are almost back to normal.

I am obviously worried about it . History of crohns , diverticulitis, ibs and bowel cancer in my family.

On Mebeverine at moment, taken buscopan in past also on mepradec

Got slightly high calprotectin test but not massively high .

Go from constipation to urgency to go and then loose but not any diarrhoea.

I guess my question is , could this all be with being morbidly obese?

Your weight would be the cause of the issues you are having? You need to make sure you are standing up and walking abit regularly. If the Chair is causing you issues, work have a duty of car to get one more suitable. Try taking a short walk in your lunch break, foot exercise and helps things move through your body. Losing weight is hard but is the key to a long life 😊

I notice you said 'as the day goes on'

I wonder if it's something at lunch you're eating that doesn't agree with you or you can't digest easily - and you're trapped in a chair where you can't move around enough?

What are you eating a lunch ? Can you go 'simple' at lunch for a couple of weeks and see if it makes a difference to the afternoon - stick to tuna/salads/unprocessed cheese rather than something more gassy like bread or pasta (no idea if you usually eat bread?)

Ellabella989 · 05/10/2019 07:36

I have IBS and it sounds like that to me.
Do you also suffer with anxiety at all as this makes mine worse. Do you get enough sleep and drink a lot of water? What is your diet like?

Seaweed42 · 05/10/2019 09:11

Dont eat bread or pasta at lunch. Eat meat or chicken etc with just salad and see what happens. No fruit either or raw vegetables.

Jumpingbean1 · 05/10/2019 13:07

@Nicola1892 thank you .I know I have lost a stone in the last month due to this annoying pain .
I know my weight is making it worse
Just it was fine before and not now .

@LaurieFairyCake it seems to start at any point even before I eat. It just gets worse the longer I am sitting. Hard to wear anything with a waistband or bra . I have been eating plain , dont eat bread or pasta. Cut out gluten and dont have milk .

@Ellabella989 I think it might be IBS but can IBS be daily and last over a month ? I do have health anxiety but the biggest thing for me is a daily uncomfortable pain which of course during this time I feel will never go away :-( . My diet is bread free, very low gluten and dont really eat pasta. I do drink caffeine.

@Seaweed42 I will give it a go .

I wonder if a liquid diet would help ?

Thanks all Smile

Glad it's not the food Grin

I also get weird pain from sitting too much - is there much option for moving around ? Or gently stretching ?

Ellabella989 · 05/10/2019 13:45

Yes IBS is often 24/7 for most sufferers and lasts forever but there are ways to manage it so the symptoms can be kept under control most of the time. I had to stop drinking caffeine as it flared mine up massively :-(

Jumpingbean1 · 05/10/2019 15:07

@laurieFairyCake a bit . I have started walking to a printer a floor away instead of on the same floor , walking to toilets further away . Walking for half my lunch break I will literally do anything!

@Ellabella989 :-( I think I might have to do that I have one coffee first thing. Have for years just black coffee . Might be work a try . I am at my wits end with it and because nothing has flagged up my GP doesn't seem sympathetic

Would IBS cause lower back ache

OP posts:
LIZS · 05/10/2019 15:12

Being overweight could cause back ache. Your posture gets thrown off balance and you should make sure your chair is appropriately adjusted if you sit for long periods. Immobility can cause digestive issues so the more you can move the better.

NanTheWiser · 05/10/2019 15:15

Yes, my IBS causes lower back ache, and sometimes pelvic discomfort too. I've had digestive problems for many years (I'm 72), put down to IBS after various tests. For me, it is 24/7, worse in the evening after my main meal. I eat low carb, and try to avoid known triggers, but I can't do without my coffee!

itsbetterthanabox · 05/10/2019 15:16

Lower back pain will be from bad posture sitting at desk.
It sounds just like IBS and trapped wind from sitting. Do you eat a lot of fat? Up soluble fibre intake and reduce fat.

Jumpingbean1 · 05/10/2019 15:26

@NanTheWiser Will be hard to give up coffee. Low carb feels better for me to !

If it is IBS I would just like a firm diagnosis of course I am losing weight to .

@itsbetterthanabox I had my gallbladder our so cant tolerate fat as much . I ear a jacket potatoes or soup for lunch mainly . I dont eat breakfast. My food intake is more evening

Anyone take any medications for IBS that help I have tried buscopan and am trying mebeverine but I dont get cramps as such

OP posts:
LIZS · 05/10/2019 15:47

Maybe it would be better if you ate some breakfast. An empty stomach may trigger symptoms.

NanTheWiser · 05/10/2019 16:31

There is no firm diagnosis for IBS, I'm afraid, it's usually given after all other causes have been excluded, and is just an umbrella term for a variety of different symptoms - hence Irritable Bowel SYNDROME.
Unfortunately doctors don't have much of a clue what causes IBS, the gut is a very complex system, and discomfort can be caused by many different things, so finding out what causes pain is often impossible.

Jumpingbean1 · 05/10/2019 17:53

@LIZS I am taking aloe vera first thing then Mebeverine then have something late morning . I think I am going to have to try breakfast

It doesn't happen when I sit at home for a period of time mainly worse in office chair and then sore when home.

Thanks @Nanthewiser

itsbetterthanabox · 05/10/2019 22:50

There is no firm diagnosis for IBS it's just a collection of symptoms no test.
They've ruled out anything serious though so it is likely that.

Jumpingbean1 · 06/10/2019 09:59

Thank you.

Awoke in pain at 6am back , hips , bowel area nothing has passed my lips since 6pm . So difficult to be in pain every day and not know when it will ease :-(

My friend was morbidly obese and suffering from a few different complaints, including stomach pains. When she lost a lot of weight she couldn't believe the difference it made to every single health complaint, including cancelling a knee operation she had been needing. I'm not saying it's definitely weight related but it sounds like it definitely could be. It's so hard, I know, I'm always having to watch what I eat too. But it sounds like it could be a great motivator to get more active and eat very healthily, especially in the evenings if that is your danger time.

Jumpingbean1 · 06/10/2019 14:33

@DrinkSangriaInThePark thank you I know I need to lose weight even start with a stone at a time. I am morbidly obese and have 2 little ones . I dread anything active and have been of and on like this for years. I know I need to get a grip and focus and I will
