QUICK HELP My 2 year old swallowed WASHING UP LIQUID

StarryStarryNight · 13/08/2007 11:36

I was in the other room, and I heard him cough, so went to check, he has climbed up on a chair to the sink, managed to reach the washing up liquid, half the bottle is gone, most is in the sink, but his arms are covered in it. Dont know how much he managed to swallow.

What is the best course of action? I have given him some milk (base vs acid) and a waffle.....

Should I just leave him to it? He is eating waffle and watching tv.

NHS direct is never any use, they always just say to go to A&E just because they want to cover their own backsides...

ring nhs direct and have the bottle handy when you speak to them

StarryStarryNight · 13/08/2007 11:40

why do washing up liquids have to smell like apricot and berries? Cant they make them really foul smelling?

What does it say on back of bottle "in case of ingestion...."

Suspect he only got a small swig of it - can't imagine anyone going back for more after a taste of that!

MerlinsBeard · 13/08/2007 11:41

do youknow he DEFINATLY dwallowed any? not just playing with it?

NHS direct may well refer to you to A&E but tbh thats whee i would be anyway if i thought that my child had swallowed wash up.

What does it say on teh back oin the bottle? if it says seek medical attention then please do

MerlinsBeard · 13/08/2007 11:42

sorry for spelling

Tigana · 13/08/2007 11:42

Don't want my washing up to smell foul!
What they usually do is put stuff in to make it taste awful so if you do try it you don't enjoy it and keep drinking.

ledodgy · 13/08/2007 11:43

If he ate much believe me he would vomit. I did the same thing when I was about four and can still remember puking after it. I reckon he hasn't swallowed much and wouldn't think washing up liquid was toxic.

Peachy · 13/08/2007 11:45

I would call NHS direct BUT remember that this stuff is designed to be plastered over crockery (albeit rinsed), so is unlikely to be dangerous

casbie · 13/08/2007 11:45

get him straight to hospital - i would have thought he woul dhave to have his stomache pumped.

: (

don't give him anything to eat or drink or try to make him vomit.

clayre · 13/08/2007 11:50

ds sprayed flash kitchen cleaner in his face and mouth and we took him to A&E and they said that most household cleaners will just irritate them give them runny poo, the only thing to really worry about is if the drink a bottle bleach!
