QUICK HELP My 2 year old swallowed WASHING UP LIQUID

StarryStarryNight · 13/08/2007 11:36

I was in the other room, and I heard him cough, so went to check, he has climbed up on a chair to the sink, managed to reach the washing up liquid, half the bottle is gone, most is in the sink, but his arms are covered in it. Dont know how much he managed to swallow.

What is the best course of action? I have given him some milk (base vs acid) and a waffle.....

Should I just leave him to it? He is eating waffle and watching tv.

have you gone yet?

Peachy · 13/08/2007 11:54

casbiew many products are extremely corrosive yes- but just checked my bottle and it has no irritant, corrosive otr otherwise labelling; therefore I think a phone call is the best first step, tbh

As I said washing up liquid is designed to be used on items that may come into contact with the mouth- dfar different from over cleaner / bleach / kitchen cleaner / dishwashing tablets (which are rinsed in machine)

call NHS, don't panic.. biggest risk is allergy iirc

ledodgy · 13/08/2007 11:55

NHS Direct says to self manage

MerlinsBeard · 13/08/2007 11:56

ledodgy, take yer coat off, you clicked no for the question did they swallow dishwashing products. you should have clicked yes which says ring 999

ledodgy · 13/08/2007 11:57

No it differentiates between hand dish washing and dish washing ie in a machine doesn't it?

MerlinsBeard · 13/08/2007 11:58

ah i only readit as dishwashing as a whole

I'll get my coat shall i?!

Best thingto do is ring them SSN

StarryStarryNight · 13/08/2007 11:59

I just spoke to the nurse at my gp, she took down the product he swallowed, and will call their poison line. As long as he is fit and well now I dont need to do something right away, but she will call back with the best way to manage this after having spoken to the poison hotline.

casbie - a bit OTT !
If it was harmful, it would have a big black X on the back in an orange square.
You would have to ingest significant quantities to do serious damage

if in doubt phone NHS direct, I've googled & found a safety data sheet for M&S citrus washing up liquid which says ingestion of over 50ml may cause vomiting. To be honest, there should be info / help line on the bottle if you need more info on that product

Gosh it is such a relief to have mumsnet when these things happens! Thanks all of you.

The nurse rang me back and said that the toxidity of this product is very low, just keep an eye on him, give him plenty to eat and drink so what ever is in his tummy blends with food and drink. And to call back if he appears unwell. Piuh!

He is a a lively one!

www.detergentinfo.com/eng/gb/product/20452209

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Formaldehyde !!!

most of these products are in the process of being banned!

www.wen.org.uk/health/Reports/cosmetics_spread2.pdf

the concentrated toxicity of it not being diluted is very hazardous. i would be the first asking for a stomach pump at the local A&E.

i'm not over-reacting, symptoms might not appear for hours while being digested at which point it is too late.

and if this happens while your asleep and not watching him - castastrophic!

loopylou6 · 13/08/2007 12:41

WOW casbie...ur really laying it on thick aint ya, the nurse ahs said its fine. Glad alls ok with ur lil one starry, kids eh lol.

StarryStarryNight · 13/08/2007 12:43

Thanks Casbie, but the nurse told the toxic hotline exactly what washing up liquid it was, and the professionals there advised her on the basis of their knowledge and the product content list for that particular product.

Casbie, sodium lauryl sulfate is in toothpaste, soap, shampoo (yes, even "no more tears" johnsons!), anything is harmful if you eat enough of it in a concentrated form but we're all exposed to these things all the time without becoming desperately ill. Hope the little one is ok ssn

casbie · 13/08/2007 12:45

whizz - "safety data sheet for M&S citrus washing up liquid which says ingestion of over 50ml may cause vomiting"

tested on a child of two years who has drunk half the bottle?

taking the advice of a nurse on a telephone who hasn't made a medical opnion by visual reference?

loupyloo - come on - the precautionary priniple dictates that just becuase something hasn't been proven to be dangerous, we shouldn't accept it's safe.

take the kid to hospital put your mind at rest, and ensure his safety.

StarryStarryNight · 13/08/2007 12:47

It is NOT this washing up liquid.

He has NOT drunk half the bottle. He has emptied the bottle in to the sink, played with the bubbles, and in the process put his messy hands to his mouth, and started to cough and splutter. At the most he has swallowed a mouth ful. I am sorry if I was unclear in my earlier description of events.

OP posts:
loopylou6 · 13/08/2007 12:47

theres NO WAY he would of drank half the bottle, have u ever tasted that stuff? starry go and put a pinprick amount on your finger and taste it. When i was pregnant with ds1 i had a craving for washing up liquid coz of the smell i think, anyway i actually tasted a pinprick amount and OMG it is foul, no way would a child drink half a bottle

StarryStarryNight · 13/08/2007 12:48

loopylou think we cross posted.

OP posts:
loopylou6 · 13/08/2007 12:49

lolol we did

casbie · 13/08/2007 12:49

read the data in link scoobi...

even in small amounts through skin of a full grown adult (absorbing into the bloodstream 60% of toxic material), can produce problems with infedelity, boy's chromosones, immune systems, digestive systems...

and this kid has drunk half a bottle of concentrated toxic washing-up liquid.

take the kid to hospital.

casbie · 13/08/2007 12:52

"Dont know how much he managed to swallow. "

of course, it's up to you.

Desiderata · 13/08/2007 12:54

CALM DOWN CASBIE!!!

diplodocus · 13/08/2007 13:01

I presume you mean infertility not infidelity Casbie? (God wouldn't it be great if you could keep men faithful by changing your washing up liquid though?). SSN has done a very thorough and appropriate check of the risks so can now relax.

Scoobi6 · 13/08/2007 13:03

Casbie, what data? I work in a lab with the concentrated, powdered forms of these chemicals - I've done the risk assessments! If the bottle isn't labelled as harmful, irritant, corrosive etc there is nothing to worry about and you can bath in it if you wish Surely kids do this sort of stuff all the time, no need to panic?

loopylou6 · 13/08/2007 13:04

diplodocus PMSL u owe me a new keyboard seeings as u caused me to spit coffee all over my keyboard with your comment...
